The video for
Bastille’s new single,
“Good Grief,” premiered today on VEVO and can be seen
HERE. A rollercoaster of humor, fear and color, it evokes that uncomfortable feeling of being stuck down the rabbit hole within a rabbit hole, the endless sequence of images that make up our dreams.
“We were excited to be able to work with NYSU (Wild Beasts, New Order, Philip Selway) on the video, which was shot over six or so days in Madrid,” says Dan Smith, Bastille’s vocalist/songwriter. “It is like a mad visual Rubik’s cube that takes a load of archetypal narrative scenarios and then twists and collides them together. We wanted to make something fun and chaotic and surreal that would serve as a fittingly odd accompaniment to the song.”
“Good Grief” was #1 Most Added across the boards at Alternative and Triple A radio in its first week of release. Available now on
iTunes and
Spotify, it is the opening track and first single from the band’s forthcoming album,
Wild World. In the U.K., “
Good Grief” was Annie Mac’s Hottest Record on Radio 1, Radio 1’s Track of the Day and was added straight to the Radio 1 A list. The song quickly shot up the iTunes chart, where it peaked at #10 and topped the Shazam chart.
Bastille will be playing numerous festivals this summer, including this weekend’s Glastonbury Festival. Prior to their Lollapalooza performance, the bandwill play an intimate show at Chicago’s Vic Theatre on July 27. Bastille will headline Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, CO on October 7. See below for itinerary. Additional headline dates will be announced.
It’s only been five years since South Londoner Dan Smith started Bastille alone in his bedroom, releasing 300 copies of debut single “Flaws/Icarus.” Joined by Chris Wood (drums), Will Farquarson (guitar) and Kyle Simmons (keyboards), the band line-up was complete. Bastille’s debut album, Bad Blood (Virgin Records), was released in 2013 and has now sold more than four million albums worldwide alongside 11 million singles. In the U.S., three tracks entered the Top 5 at Alternative radio – the 5x Platinum single “Pompeii” and the Gold-certified “Bad Blood” and “Flaws.” “Pompeii” topped Billboard’s Alternative Songs, Hot Rock Songs and Adult Alternative Songs charts and peaked at No. 3 on the Pop Songs chart. Bastille received two GRAMMY® nominations and two American Music Awards nominations.
Wild World retains the vivid, filmic songwriting of its predecessor but pushes the band’s unique sound in new directions. Lyrically, too, it’s a leap forward. “If our first album was about growing up and the anxieties surrounding it, our second is about trying to make sense of the world around you, both as you see it and as it’s presented to you through the media,” Smith explains. “It’s also about asking questions of the world and of the people in it.”
Bastille announced the album’s title by releasing
this cinematic trailer on Facebook. It amassed over 500,000 views in just 48 hours and now has upwards of 1.2 million views.
