BACKSTAGE AT THE PLAYERS SCRATCHES YOUR ITCH FOR COMEDY AS IT

OPENS ITS SEASON WITH “BREAKING OUT IN IVES”

SARASOTA – Backstage at The Players will be “Breaking Out in Ives” as the intimate black box studio launches its fourth season Oct. 16 with six one-act comedies by the acclaimed wordsmith David Ives.

The plays range from the zany but extremely brief romance of  two little mayflies in “Time Flies” to acts of kindness performed by two aged Polish ladies preparing a funeral breakfast on a bare stage in “Lives of The Saints.”

We’ve culled six of Ives’ wittiest, most hilarious plays that we thought our audience would especially love,” says director Linda MacCluggage. “Nothing is contagious but the laughs!”

This is the biggest show that Backstage at The Players has ever staged with 15 actors and six set changes playing in the intimate black box theater located in the back of The Players Theatre complex. The ensemble includes Ross Boehringer, Dianne Brin, Drew Deininger, John Forsyth, Adam Garrison, Donna Gerdes, Ronda Hewitt, Mary Jo Johnson, Gary Lee, Richard LeVene, Neil Levine, Bill Morris and Betty Robinson with Freddie Lamoreaux and Cindy Schlotterback as The Clowns. Chuck Conlon and Ann Gundersheimer are assistant directors.

“Breaking Out in Ives” will be followed this season by “Circle Mirror Transformation” Jan. 29-Feb. 8 and “The Lyons” April 9-19. The alternative theater’s mission is to present exciting contemporary work in a spirit of adventure for actor and audience alike.
