BACKSTAGE AT THE PLAYERS ANNOUNCES 2014-15 SEASON
SARASOTA – Plays by three of America’s most exciting playwrights will be presented during the Backstage at The Players 2014-15 season, the fourth season for The Players studio
series of adventurous, contemporary plays.
The season kicks off in October with “Breaking Out in Ives,” a program of six one act comedies by David Ives (“Venus in Fur”;”All in The Timing”). Ives is one of the most produced playwrights in the country. This special collection will bring Sarasota audiences some of his most hilarious and inventive works, according to Linda MacCluggage who coordinates the Backstage series with Kaylene McCaw. “Ives is the recognized master of the short comic play,” MacCluggage says. “Audiences will leave this show with big smiles, guaranteed.”
“Circle Mirror Transformation” by Pulitzer Prize winner Annie Baker (“The Flick”) will take the second slot in January. This warm and affecting drama examines the big and small life changes that a group of community theater students experience over six weeks of playing theater games and acting exercises. McCaw notes that the drama is set in a small rehearsal studio identical to the Backstage performance space which gives the play special resonance.
Finally, Nicky Silver’s dark and scathingly funny adult comedy “The Lyons” will wrap up the season in April. A hit both off and on Broadway, the play features a family that defines dysfunction. Matriarch Rita Lyons deals with a foul-mouthed dying husband, two troubled adult children, a living room that needs redecorating and her own survival strategy in the jungles of Manhattan.
Subscriptions are available for $45 and guarantee reserved seating. Single tickets are $18.
