The Ying Quartet occupies a position of unique prominence in the classical music world, combining brilliantly communicative performances with a fearlessly imaginative view of chamber music in today’s world. Now in its second decade, the Ying Quartet (Ayano Ninomiya, violin; Janet Ying, violin; Phillip Ying, viola; and David Ying, cello) has established itself as an ensemble of the highest musical qualifications. The group has performed at Carnegie Hall, Sydney Opera House, The White House and many other prestigious venues. Simultaneously, the quartet strives to make concert music a vital part of daily life by performing in workplaces, schools, and juvenile prisons. The Ying Quartet is famed for its diverse performance projects, including the “No Boundaries” series at Symphony Space in New York City (which re-imagined the concert experience in a collaboration with actors, dancers, a magician and even a Chinese noodle chef), as well as its collaboration with composer Tod Machover at the MIT Media lab, employing Hyperscore musical composition software. As quartet-in-residence at the Eastman School of Music, the Ying Quartet teaches in the string department and leads a rigorous, sequentially designed chamber music program.
