(Sarasota, FL) Art Center Sarasota’s 2016-2017 exhibition season, entitled “Common Ground,” continues with the “Pop-Up” series, featuring three exhibits, May 13-18. According to Sarah Viviana Valdez, Art Center Sarasota’s exhibitions and marketing coordinator, the series is an initiative designed to offer area-based high school and college students the opportunity to take their art to a higher level. “This program came into fruition as a response to young artists who reached out to Art Center Sarasota for exhibition opportunities,” says Valdez. “We work with them to develop their projects and give them exhibit space and an audience. For many, it’s the first time they’ve worked directly with a professional art space or gallery. It’s a real learning experience for them.”

The Booker High VPA Seniors Exhibit, in Gallery One, features art by the talented students in Booker’s VPA program. “All About the Scrim,” in Gallery Two, is an exhibition of photographs created by students studying location lighting with Tom Winchester at Ringling College of Art and Design. “One Mind,” in Gallery Three, was organized by Sy Schimberg, a junior student at Pine View High School. The project features the works of 10 artists invited by Schimberg to create art works that were made as a reaction or response to his writing. The opening reception for all four exhibits is Wednesday, May 17, 5-7 p.m. Art Center Sarasota is located at 707 N. Tamiami Trail, in Sarasota. The Booker High VPA Senior Thesis Exhibit features approximately 50 works of art in various media by 10 talented students in Booker’s VPA program. The VPA Visual Art program is directed toward serious and passionate students who want their art work to be an expressive interpretation of their inner thoughts and feelings. Every day the students are encouraged to think differently, to dream, and to go beyond expectations. Teachers provide individual instruction, which helps students develop the skills and confidence they need to acquire for a career in an art profession.

All About the Scrim” is an exhibition of photographs created by students studying location lighting with Tom Winchester at Ringling College of Art and Design. The students are sophomore-level majors in photography and imaging, and junior-level majors in film. “This class provides an opportunity for photography students to learn technical skills in a real-world setting. By travelling outside of the studio, students are faced with lighting situations that involve such aspects beyond their control as daylight, incandescent light, and fluorescent light. These situations provide difficulties when balancing in-camera with strobes, and the best way to familiarize the students with such advanced techniques is to provide them with opportunities to practice,” says Winchester. He adds that the lighting techniques covered by this class set these students apart from most amateur photographers partly because of the level of proficiency required to successfully capture the desired image and because of the access they’ve been granted to exclusive locations, including the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, the new Ringling College Soundstage, the Urbanite Theater, the Robert L. Taylor Community Complex and several others. The artists include Stephanie Bravo, Chad Chhay, Alex Corradino, Rita Seixas, Alex Goulart, Kat Macmillan, Megan Matheney, Becca Morrello, Abigail Nilsson, Marcia Poloski, Victoria Provost, Brandon Richards, Lilibeth Robles, Jeremy Teran, and Alva Christo.

One Mind” is an art project organized by Sy Schimberg, a junior student at Pine View High School. For this first installment of the project, Sy has written a piece to be “interpreted” by different artists. “This project creates a platform for him to learn about the process of interpreting text as a visual or audio language with a community of other young artists,” says Valdez, Art Center Sarasota’s exhibitions and marketing coordinator. She explains that the exhibition includes works by 10 artists invited by Sy to create art works that were made as a reaction or response to his writing. “What I found most intriguing about his proposal for this exhibit was his interest to explore the topic of interpreting images and what that means to the artist and spectator. This Pop-Up series is the perfect space to facilitate ideas like this for the local youth.” Schimberg says that one objective of the exhibit is to “convey the idea that a simple change in perspective, or a willingness to live life in a grey zone of uncertainty, the realization that not all that exists requires a title or a reason, can help a confused and tangled society to discover cohesion. ‘One Mind’ hopes to be a part of this change and eventually grow to promote our message throughout the world.”
