“Two”
A Performance Piece Created by Wojtek Sawa

Performance artist Wojtek Sawa and Leymis Bolanos Wilmott, the artistic director of Fusion Dance Artists, have joined forces to create this interactive performance art event exploring the qualities of two.
(Sarasota, FL) Art Center Sarasota presents “Two,” a performance art piece created by artist Wojtek Sawa in collaboration with Leymis Bolanos Wilmott and the Fuzion Dance Artists, Monday, August 17, 3 p.m., at Art Center Sarasota, 707 N. Tamiami Trail, in Sarasota. This two-part interactive performance, featuring dancers from Fuzion Dance Artists, is free and open to the public. Guests are invited to arrive early as seating is limited.
Two, Wojtek Sawas conversation of movement, explores the basic qualities of “two,” as dancers from Fuzion Dance Artists utilize performance and audience interaction to physically express polarities, harmonies and contrasts.
Wojtek and Leymis have created a fascinating work exploring the permutations of opposites and the eternal dance between reconciliation and opposition,” says Lisa Berger, executive director of Art Center Sarasota. She explains that the piece will be presented in two parts; the first of which will focus on the interplay between two dancers. The second part focuses on the viewer-performer relationship, with viewers determining the outcome of the story.
The performance will be enriched and strengthened through a juxtaposition of methodical structure and spontaneous sincerity, says Sawa. “It’s cerebral and structured, as well as spontaneous and vulnerable as the dancers tune into each other and to the conditions determined by the audience.
Sawa, a Sarasota-based artist specializing in installations and performance art, was born in Poland and emigrated to the United States as a child. He has presented performance works at various public venues throughout Europe and the U.S.
“The basic storyline is that two strangers become interested in each other,” he says. “They want to check each other out, find what they’re made of and discover if they are compatible. As their interest grows, they connect more closely, explore each other’s emotions and their movements start to harmonize. Despite this, they’re still cautious, edgy.” Sawa explains that, in the second part of the performance, the audience is given the power to direct the two peopleto place conditions on the storyline development. “In a sense, the audience becomes demigods determining the fate of these two beings.

About Art Center Sarasota
Art Center Sarasota was the first arts and cultural institution in Sarasota. It was founded in 1926 as the Sarasota Art Association by Marcia Rader, the art supervisor for the Sarasota County schools district. In the early years, the group met monthly and sponsored exhibits in rented facilities.
