The Sarasota Architectural Foundation will present an opening reception talk with architect and author John Howey, FAIA, on Friday, August 5, 5:30-7:30 p.m. Wine and light hors d’oeuvres will be served; the event is open and free to the public. For more information, call 941-366-2454 or visit www.allyngallup.com. The gallery is at 1288 N. Palm Ave., Sarasota.
John Howey, a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, has practiced architecture in the Tampa Bay region in Florida since 1965. His interest in Sarasota’s modern architecture began in college and grew as he met Sarasota architects while serving as an intern in the area in the early 1960s. In the 1990s, he began writing and lecturing about Sarasota architecture, culminating in the 1995 publication of his book, The Sarasota School of Architecture, 1941-1966. In 1996, Howey created an exhibition with the same name that featured photographs, renderings and architectural models.
“There’s an interesting parallel between abstract art and modernist and mid-century architecture,” says gallery director Sheila Moore, explaining the reason behind Howey’s opening reception talk. “Both try to distill form to its essence.” She adds that “viewers will have an opportunity to experience freedom from form in numerous ways.”
