This stylistically diverse show cuts a broad swath across medium and theme and includes abstractions of the natural world, hyper-real photography, nuanced graphite drawings on paper, gothically rendered oils, thickly layered baroque surrealism, and heroic sculptural pieces.

(Sarasota, FL) Allyn Gallup Contemporary Art gallery presents “Made in Sarasota,” March 5-March 29, 2014. The show features works by Sarasota-based and globally celebrated artists. The exhibit’s represented artists are Kim Anderson, Jean Blackburn, Jorge Blanco, Aaron Board, Tom Carabasi, Hugh Davies, Robert Farber, Hugh Davies, Nancy Hellebrand, Susan Klein, Dennis Kowal, Andrew Kuziak, George Pappas, Vicky Randall, Gale Fulton Ross, Rob Tarbell and Susan Zukowsky. This stylistically diverse show cuts a broad swath across both medium and theme and includes abstractions of the natural world, hyper-real photography, nuanced graphite drawings on paper, gothically rendered oils, thickly layered baroque surrealism, and heroic sculptural pieces.

Gallery director Allyn Gallup says the artists in this exhibition represent some of our region’s top talents. But just because their art is made here doesn’t mean it stays here. According to Gallup, the talent on display is globally respected, though often neglected at home. “The title’s ironic,” he says. “I don’t want people to see this exhibit because these artists are from around here. I want people to see it because it’s world-class art by established artists. There’s an invisible prejudice against hometown artists. As the saying goes, ‘A prophet is not without honor, except in his own country.’ These artists deserve our honor. I’m just trying to set the record straight.”
