Alabama Shakes will launch their spring North American tour tonight with a sold-out show at Ascend Amphitheater in Nashville. The concert is the first of eight headline dates the band will be playing in the South prior to its performances at SunFest 2016 and the Hangout Festival in Florida. From there, Alabama Shakes will head to the Pacific Northwest for a pair of sold-out headline shows and an appearance at Sasquatch! 2016.
The band will also be touring this summer, playing a mixture of headline dates – including sold-out shows in Memphis, Chicago, Los Angeles and Berkeley – and festivals such as Forecastle, British Summer Time Hyde Park, the inaugural Panorama Festival in New York City and the first-ever Vertex Festival in Colorado. See below for itinerary. Tickets are available HERE.
Sound & Color (ATO Records), the band’s sophomore album, has received a Billboard Music Awards Nomination for Top Rock Album. The 2016 Billboard Music Awards will take place on May 22 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas and air live on ABC. Sound & Color, certified Gold by the RIAA, won a GRAMMY Award for Best Alternative Music Album. The album’s first single, “Don’t Wanna Fight,” took honors in the Best Rock Performance and Best Rock Song categories, bringing the band’s awards tally to three. In addition, Sound & Color was named the Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical.
Alabama Shakes – comprising lead singer/guitarist Brittany Howard, guitarist Heath Fogg, bassist Zac Cockrell, drummer Steve Johnson, and touringkeyboard players Ben Tanner and Paul Horton – have also earned acclaim for their live performances.
“[The band] hasn’t lost its fire since it stormed into fame with ‘Boys & Girls’ in 2012. Brittany Howard commands a stage and holds an enormous crowd with a vice grip,” said The Denver Post’s Hey Reverb in a review of their sold-out 2015 Red Rocks Amphitheatre concert. The Dallas Observer praised their “jaw-dropping show,” noting, “the Shakes, on top of their game after the…release of Sound & Color, one of 2015’s best records, moved effortlessly between earthy blues and dusty soul with some of the smoothest yet most dramatic transitions in the game, peppering in the sudden spasms of filthy garage music that made for some of the night’s liveliest moments.” The Columbus Dispatch hailed an outdoor set delivered in the rain as “an electrifying 90 minutes that frequently were explosive and always were passionate.” “Alabama Shakes dazzle,” observed the Atlanta Journal Constitution.
