ABC NEWS WINS FOUR EDWARD R. MURROW AWARDS INCLUDING OVERALL EXCELLENCE IN TELEVISION

Today ABC News President James Goldston sent the following note to the news division announcing that ABC News won four Edward R. Murrow Awards including Overall Excellence in television, Breaking News for the network’s coverage of Hurricane Michael, Excellence in Innovation for ABC News Radio podcast, Start Here, and Sports Reporting for ABC News Radio.

I am thrilled to share that ABC News has won four Edward R. Murrow Awards. This year the wins include their most prestigious honor for television, Overall Excellence. This is the fourth time in six years we’ve earned this award, a great achievement – and a testament to the incredible work of every one of you in this News Division. The judges noted our‘amazing storytelling’,married to our unwavering commitment to reporting, innovation, and our work as one seamless team, to push ABC News forward.

Our Overall Excellence entry reflects the scope and scale of our reporting around the world, including our investigation into inadequate medical care in detention centers, the largely untold plight of the Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh, and our three prime-time hours on the rescued Thai soccer team. From a landmark feature-length documentary on six months in the life of the students of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fl, to ABC News Digital’s cinematic features, to using new augmented reality technology to enhance our viewers understanding during our midterm election coverage, ABC News has continued to find new and distinctive ways to tell the stories that matter.

And the judges recognized our extraordinary bookings and interviews this year with newsmakers from James Comey to Michael Cohen – driving the national conversation.

ABC News won the Breaking News category for our compelling moment by moment coverage of Hurricane Michael.  Our teams travelled into Florida expecting to cover a category 1 or 2 storm, but it soon became clear that the Florida Panhandle would be dealing with a huge storm. Our teams faced 155 mile per hour winds and we saw the hotel awning David Muir and the team believed would protect them collapse, as Ginger Zee watched the home across the street from her location literally float away.

ABC News Radio has been awarded the Murrow for Excellence in Innovation for our flagship podcast, Start Here, which is a first for us. In addition to bringing in our trusted correspondents for in-depth, flowing conversations,  Brad Mielke and the Start Here team feature our behind-the scenes producers and researchers for an added context not heard in traditional newscasts.

Radio also received the award for Sports Reporting for America’s Next Pastime, in which Scott Goldberg dug into whether soccer’s surging popularity in the U.S. might overtake our long-beloved baseball.

This is a proud day for ABC News. I am so grateful for your tireless dedication. And I know we are ready for another extraordinary year ahead.

James
