More Than 15 million kids have no place to go after school:
Access to afterschool programs can dramatically
Help reverse the most negative trends facing our youth

Popular actor, father of 2-year old twins and former Boys & Girls Club (BGCA) member Nick Cannon, along with Grammy-award winning superstar Ne-Yo, also a former Boys & Girls Club member, are helping announce a new program aimed at mobilizing the country in support of kids who need them the most and empowering this next generation to be successful, productive citizens.

As the nation prepares to go back to school, BGCA wants to ensure “out-of-school” time is part of the conversation. On Thursday July 31st, BGCA will launch the Great Futures Campaign and mobilize the public by taking over Times Square, aka “The Cross Roads of the World.”

During the school year, 50 million kids leave school and 15 million have no place to go at 3 p.m. They risk being unsupervised, unguided and unsafe. Research shows that what happens during out-of-school time can significantly impact a child’s path. For example, reports show that juvenile violence peaks in the afterschool hours on school days, with a third (29%) of all juvenile violent crime occurring 3-7 p.m. However, by providing access to positive and productive afterschool and summer programs, like those offered by Boys & Girls Clubs, we can help reverse the most negative trends facing our youth, community and country:

  • Today’s generation is estimated to be worse off than their parents, the first in America’s history
  • Our nation’s graduation rate ranks 22nd among 28 countries
  • Three out of 10 kids are obese or overweight
