Music Advancement Program (MAP)
The Juilliard School’s Music Advancement Program (MAP) is a Saturday instrument instruction program for highly talented students, ages 8 to 14, who reside in the tri-state area (NY, NJ, CT). MAP targets children from backgrounds underrepresented in American performing arts. This nationally-recognized program has served as an essential bridge to higher levels of musicianship, cultural participation, and personal growth for hundreds of young students.
MAP offers four levels of study ranging from intermediate to advanced. All students receive private or semi-private lessons on violin, viola, cello, double bass, flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, trumpet, trombone, French horn, tuba, saxophone, percussion, guitar, or piano. They also participate in small and large ensembles and chamber music groups, and take courses in music theory, ear training, performance skills, and audition preparation.
The Music Advancement Program of approximately 70 students presents a variety of performances on Saturdays throughout the academic year, including student recitals, chamber music, and small ensemble concerts, and performances by the MAP Chorus. This season, on Saturday, January 24, 2015 at 2 PM, the Music Advancement Program’s Wind Ensemble, led by Terry Szor, and the String Ensemble and MAP Orchestra, led by Murray Colosimo, will offer MAP’s debut performance in Juilliard’s Peter Jay Sharp Theater.
