(Sarasota, FL) Art Center Sarasota presents a staged reading of “Walter Cronkite is Dead,” by Joe Calarco, February 9, 4 p.m., at Art Center Sarasota, 707 N. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota. A donation of $10 is requested. For more information, call 941-365-2032 or visit www.artsarasota.org/theatermind.

“Walter Cronkite is Dead,” with Janet Davies and Emilie Robinson, is a warm and insightful comedy about two very different women who are stranded in an airport. Patty is a chatty southerner with a blue collar job; Margaret is a reserved, educated and liberal Washingtonian. To pass the time, they begin a conversation, slowly revealing profound truths about each other’s lives. Their conversation leads them to a place of kinship that neither could have imagined. The play examines what might be possible if people from opposite sides of the political aisle would stop shouting and take even one night to listen.

Theater of the Mind, established in 2010 by Emilie Robinson and Janet Davies, presents play readings and staged performances at Art Center Sarasota. All proceeds benefit Art Center Sarasota. The season continues with “A Voice of My Own” (March 2, 4 p.m.); and “Coming to Life” (March 23, 4 p.m.).

About Art Center Sarasota

Art Center Sarasota was the first arts and cultural institution in Sarasota. It was founded in 1926 as the “Sarasota Art Association” by Marcia Rader, the art supervisor for the Sarasota County schools district. In the early years, the group met monthly and sponsored exhibits in rented facilities. The Association was incorporated as a not-for-profit organization in 1943 and has been in its current location in the Sarasota Bayfront Cultural District since 1949. Art Center Sarasota is now a membership-based organization that offers curated and juried exhibitions, adult and youth education programs, outreach initiatives for underserved youth, and culturally related public programming. Art Center Sarasota’s mission is to inspire individual creative expression, nurture artistic talent and provide the community with accessible and diverse visual art opportunities.
