Sarasota natives Come Back Alice are arriving on a one stop funk railroad at the Van Wezel’s FridayFest! Impressive improvs, notable tunes, and audience friendly melodies make these southern gypsy rockers a perfect fit for the popular bay front concert series.“Everyone said you couldn’t combine quirky classical stylings, funky drums, and fiddle,” says lead guitar and vocalist Tony Tyler. “But it’s that unexpected combination that makes people quickly take notice and groove along with Come Back Alice.”
Chugging on the tracks since 2011, the CBA train comes equipped with a full production of lights, sound, and a promise to never play the same show twice.
Bring your blankets or lawn chairs and settle in to enjoy the music, sunset, food and beverages from local vendors, and get in on some great raffle prizes. Emceed by the electric Ray Collins, FridayFest takes place in rain or shine. In the event of inclement weather, the Festival will move indoors to the Main Hall of the Van Wezel. Bringing in food and drink from outside the Fest is prohibited.

Florida Studio Theatre presents the U.S. premier of Taking Shakespeare, by John Murrell, the final show in the Summer Mainstage Season. The show will run in the Gompertz Theatre through August 17.Who appreciates Shakespeare anymore? Murph sure doesn’t, and seeks out an older Shakespeare scholar, to bring the Bard’s words to life. This enchanting, eccentric journey creates a beautiful dichotomy between Shakespeare’s verse and today’s language. Is it possible for this avid video-game lover to love Shakespeare?
Taking Shakespeare explores the depth and inner workings of these two opposing characters with lovely accents of charm and humor.

On July 26, go Behind the Curtain with Kira Blazek the artist in residence and guest choreographer at Fuzión Dance Artists.
For the second summer in a row, Blazek joins Fuzión Dance Artists to create a new work after a highly successful premier with Fuzión last March.
Behind the Curtain is an open rehearsal series with Fuzión Guest Artists and Choreographers that invites the community to see a work in its early stages and to dialogue with the Choreographer as they set the work. It will take place at the New College of Florida Fitness Center.
Blazek is a dancer, teacher, and choreographer. Her classical training began at the Houston Ballet Academy, under the direction of Clara Cravey and Steve Brule. Blazek went on to receive a BFA in Modern Dance Performance from the University of Oklahoma. She then joined Hubbard Street 2 (Chicago, IL) and toured extensively in the U.S. and Germany, dancing works by Robert Battle, Christian Spuck among others. Blazek then relocated to New York and immediately began dancing for Douglas Dunn & Dancers, becoming both rehearsal director and assistant to Douglas. She eventually became one of four Americans certified to teach Countertechnique®, a contemporary dance technique developed by Anouk van Dijk.

The search is over for the Guide to Arts and Culture 2014-15 cover art.We are poud to announce that the winner is Bettina Sego!
The piece, Sailing Away, will appear on the cover to the guide, and Sego will have the chance to exhibit art in the Center for Arts and Humanity. Sego will also receive recognition in the September Arts & Culture issue of SCENE Magazine with an artist bio and statement.
