Juilliard announces its roster of recitals and chamber music concerts for the 2014-15 season beginning with the Daniel Saidenberg Faculty Recital Series featuring annual appearances by the Juilliard String Quartet and the American Brass Quintet. The American Brass Quintet pays tribute to its two former members, Raymond Mase and David Wakefield, and welcomes its two new members, Louis Hanzlik and Eric Reed. Highlights of the season include recitals by violinist Catherine Cho and pianist Robert McDonald on Tuesday, October 14, 2014 at 8 PM in Paul Hall; Juilliard String Quartet member, cellist Joel Krosnick, and his longtime duo partner, pianist Gilbert Kalish on Monday, March 16, 2015 at 8 PM in Paul Hall; Juilliard’s graduate resident string quartet, the Aeolus Quartet, on Monday, May 4, 2015 at 8 PM in Alice Tully Hall. The Daniel Saidenberg Faculty Recital Series and Juilliard’s new season opens with a recital by organist Paul Jacobs, chair of Juilliard’s Organ Department, on Wednesday, September 10, 2014 at 8 PM in Paul Hall performing solo organ works by J.S. Bach and Max Reger. The program includes: Reger’s Fantasy and Fugue on Bach, Op. 46; J.S. Bach’s Prelude and Fugue in D Minor, BWV 539 (the “Fiddle” fugue); and Reger’s Introduction, Variations, and Fugue on an Original Theme, Op. 73.
An eloquent champion of his instrument, arguing that the organ for too long has been excluded from the mainstream of classical music, Paul Jacobs is known for his imaginative interpretations and charismatic stage presence. He has also been an important influence in the revival of symphonic music featuring the organ. The first and only organist ever to have won a Grammy Award (in 20011 for Messiaen’s challenging Livre du Saint-Sacrement), Mr. Jacobs combines a probing intellect and extraordinary technical skills with a repertoire that spans the gamut of music written for his instrument, both old and new. He has transfixed audiences, colleagues, and critics with landmark performances of the complete works for solo organ by J.S. Bach and Messiaen, as well as a vast array of other composers. A fierce advocate for new music, he has premiered the works of Samuel Adler, Mason Bates, Michael Daugherty, Wayne Oquin, Stephen Paulus, and Christopher Theofanidis, among others.
Violinist Catherine Cho and pianist Robert McDonald perform an all-Beethoven program on Tuesday, October 14, 2014 at 8 PM in Paul Hall. The program features Sonata No. 1 in D Major, Op. 12, No. 1; Sonata No. 10 in G Major, Op. 96; and Sonata No. 7 in C Minor, Op. 30, No. 2.
Catherine Cho’s orchestral engagements have included performances with the Detroit and National symphony orchestras, the Virginia Symphony, the Montreal, Edmonton, and National Arts Centre orchestras in Canada, the Korean Broadcasting Symphony, Daekon Philharmonic, and Seoul Philharmonic in Korea, the Barcelona Symphony, the Orchestra of the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, and the Aspen Chamber Symphony. She has toured Israel with the Haifa Symphony and was the soloist on a concert tour of Japan and Korea with the Juilliard Orchestra. As a recitalist and chamber musician, Ms. Cho has performed on the prestigious stages of Alice Tully Hall with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Casals Hall in Tokyo as a member of the Casals Hall Ensemble, The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, and on Ravinia’s “Rising Stars” series in Chicago. A winner of the Avery Fisher Career Grant, Ms. Cho has won top prizes at several international competitions. She is a member of the violin faculty at Juilliard.
American pianist Robert McDonald has performed throughout the United States, Europe, Latin America, and Asia both as a solo recitalist, and for many years, as recital partner to Isaac Stern and other distinguished instrumentalists. He has appeared with major orchestras in the United States and Europe. As a chamber musician, he has performed with the Juilliard, American, Takács, Muir, Brentano, St. Lawrence, Vermeer, Borromeo, and Shanghai string quartets, as well as with Musicians from Marlboro. In addition, he has given concerts for the Lincoln Center Chamber Music Society, the Chicago Chamber Musicians, NHK, and BBC television worldwide. His discography includes recordings for Sony Classical, Vox, Bridge, Musical Heritage Society, ASV, and CRI. He is a member of the piano faculties of Juilliard and the Curtis Institute of Music. Mr. McDonald is winner of the Gold Medal at the Busoni International Competition, and the top prizes at both the William Kapell International Competition, and the Washington International Competition.

The American Brass Quintet is internationally recognized as one of the premier chamber music ensembles and an icon in the brass world. The ABQ’s 54-year history includes performances in Europe, Central and South America, the Middle East, Asia, Australia, and all 50 of the United States; a discography of more than 55 recordings; and the premieres of more than 155 contemporary brass works. In commemoration of the ABQ’s 50th anniversary in 2010, Summit Records released a double CD, State of the Art – the ABQ at 50, of works written for the ABQ in the last decade.
New member, trumpeter Louis Hanzlik, is a member of the Grammy® Award-winning Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, Orchestra of St. Luke’s, and was a member of the Atlantic Brass Quintet (2002-2013). He also frequently performs with the Caramoor International Music Festival and the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. He can be heard on more than a dozen recordings, and he has recorded frequently for commercial radio and television and for numerous public radio and television features. Mr. Hanzlik is a faculty member of Juilliard.
New member hornist Eric Reed, an active freelance musician in New York City since 2006, has performed with the New York Philharmonic, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, Orchestra of St. Luke’s, International Contemporary Ensemble, and others. He has previously been a member of the Oregon Symphony, New World Symphony, Harrisburg Symphony, Ensemble ACJW, Burning River Brass, Spectrum Brass, and Canadian Brass (2010-2013). He is a 2002 Tanglewood Fellow, earning the Harry Shapiro Award for outstanding brass playing. He is a faculty member of Juilliard and the Aspen Music School and Festival.
The Juilliard String Quartet performs two recitals, on Monday, October 27, 2014 and Thursday, February 5, 2015 at 8 PM,in Alice Tully Hall. Members of the Juilliard String Quartet are violinists Joseph Lin and Ronald Copes, violist Roger Tapping, and cellist Joel Krosnick. The program for the October 27th recital features Webern’s Five Movements, Op. 5; Berg’s Quartet, Op. 3; and Schubert’s Quartet in D Minor, “Death and the Maiden.” The program for the February 5th recital features Haydn’s Quartet in G Major, Op. 33, No. 5; Shulamit Ran’s Quartet No. 2, “Vistas”;and Beethoven’s Quartet in F Major, Op. 135. The Juilliard String Quartet holds its annual seminar bringing quartets from around the globe to Juilliard to be coached by members of the JSQ in a weeklong seminar that concludes with two free recitals on Friday, May 22, 2015 at 3:30 PM and 7:30 PM in Juilliard’s Paul Hall. Cellist Joel Krosnick and his duo partner, pianist Gilbert Kalish, perform in recital on Monday, March 16, 2015 at 8 PM in Paul Hall. (Program to be announced.)
Joel Krosnick has performed as soloist, recitalist, and chamber musician around the world. As a member of the Juilliard String Quartet since 1974, he has performed the great quartet literature throughout North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. With his sonata partner of more than 30 years, pianist Gilbert Kalish, Mr. Krosnick has performed recitals throughout the United States and Europe. Since 1976, they have given annual series of recitals in New York City and in 2007, presented the series, “American Milestone of the Last 100 Years” at Juilliard. With Mr. Kalish, Mr. Krosnick has recorded the complete sonatas and variations of Beethoven and the sonatas of Brahms, as well as works by Poulenc, Prokofiev, Carter, Hindemith, Debussy, Janáček, and Cowell for the Arabesque label. Especially noteworthy is their CD devoted to the cello and piano music of Ralph Shapey. Released in January 2012 is a CD, Forgotten Americans, featuring the music of Ernst Bacon, Otto Luening, Hall Overton, and Ben Weber. A dedicated teacher, Mr. Krosnick is chair of Juilliard’s cello department and is a member of the faculty of Kneisel Hall Chamber Music Festival in Maine.
The profound influence of pianist Gilbert Kalish as an educator and pianist in myriad performances and recordings has established him as a major figure in American music-making. He recently appeared with the St. Petersburg Chamber Philharmonic, performed at the Ojai Music Festival, and held a residency at the San Francisco Conservatory. He was the pianist for the Boston Symphony Chamber Players for 30 years, and was a founding member of the Contemporary Chamber Ensemble, a group that flourished during the 1960s and 70s in support of new music. Mr. Kalish is particularly known for his partnership of many years with mezzo-soprano Jan DeGaetani, as well as for current collaborations with soprano Dawn Upshaw and cellists Timothy Eddy and Joel Krosnick. As an educator and performer, he has appeared at the Banff Centre, the Steans Institute at Ravinia, the Marlboro Music Festival, and Music@Menlo; from 1985 to 1997 he served as chairman of the Tanglewood faculty. His discography of more than 100 recordings embraces both the classical and contemporary repertoires. A distinguished professor at SUNY Stony Brook, Mr. Kalish has been an artist of The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center since 2009.

A highlight of ChamberFest 2015 will be the SYLFF Chamber Music Seminar Concert on opening night with students from Juilliard joined by students from the Paris Conservatoire and Vienna University in three chamber music groups. Each season, ChamberFest showcases Juilliard musicians who return early from their winter breaks to rehearse chamber works of their choosing in intensive rehearsal sessions with Juilliard faculty coaches, with a final performance open to the public. The Aeolus Quartet are winners of the 2013 Fischoff Educator Award, grand prizewinners of the 2011 Plowman Chamber Music Competition, and 2011 Chamber Music Yellow Springs Competition. They were awarded first prize at the 2009 Coleman International Chamber Ensemble Competition, a silver medal at the 2011 Fischoff International Chamber Music Competition, and a bronze medal at the 2010 International Chamber Music Ensemble Competition in New England. The Quartet has performed across North America, Europe, and Asia, in venues such as Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, Reinberger Recital Hall at Severance Hall, Merkin Hall, the Library of Congress, St. Martin-in-the-Fields, and the Shanghai Oriental Arts Center. They participated in Aspen’s Center for Advanced Quartet Studies, led by Juilliard’s Earl Carlyss, in 2009. The members of the Aeolus Quartet hold degrees from the Peabody Conservatory, the Cleveland Institute of Music, and the University of Texas at Austin, where they served as the first graduate string quartet-in-residence. They hold doctoral degrees at the University of Maryland where they were the graduate fellowship string quartet-in-residence. The Quartet is named for the Greek god, Aeolus, the keeper of the four winds. He is known for welcoming Odysseus and his crew with music during their journey back to Ithaca in Homer’s Odyssey.

Pianist Jie Yuan in Recital at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall
Juilliard presents Chinese pianist Jie Yuan in recital Wednesday, November 13, 2014 at 8 PM in Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in the third annual Leo Ruiz Memorial Recital. Jie Yuan, an alumnus of Juilliard graduated with the School’s Artist Diploma, the highest level performance degree at Juilliard and is winner of the 2014 Leo Ruiz Memorial Recital Award. Mr. Yuan performs a world premiere by alumnus Peng-Peng Gong entitled Three Preludes for Piano, Op. 42; Schumann’s Kreisleriana, Op. 16; and Chopin’s 24 Preludes, Op. 28.
Pianist Jie Yuan has performed with orchestras and in recital throughout all five continents. His orchestral appearances have included the China National Symphony Orchestra, Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra, Real Orquesta Sinfónica de Sevilla, Orchestre des Champs-Elysées, Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Morocco Royal Philharmonic, among others. He has had numerous solo recital appearances in Carnegie Hall and Alice Tully Hall, and venues around the United States and in Asia. He holds a master of music and Artist Diploma from Juilliard where he studied with Dr. Yoheved Kaplinsky.

The Bachauer competition awards young artists free tuition scholarships to Juilliard. The award, which assists highly accomplished pianists in launching their careers, was established more than 25 years ago through the generosity of the William Petschek Charitable Trust. Juilliard announces its “Tuesdays at Twelve” at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church (65th Street and Central Park West, NYC), featuring Juilliard Historical Performance musicians in a free lunchtime series that expands the School’s traditional “Wednesdays at One” series at Alice Tully Hall. The four concerts at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in the series – October 7, December 16, February 24, and April 21 –all take place on Tuesdays at 1 PM and feature chamber music on period instruments in the 110-year-old church, home of the celebrated Bach Vespers series.
