Local Foundation, Volunteers and Businesses Honored, SunCoast Blood Bank Receives Awards at Annual Conferences; Mary Ann Legler,  President of SCBB; Kelly Romanoff and Teri A Hansen of Gulf Coast Community Foundation; Scott Bush, CEO of SCBB

Sarasota, FL – Gulf Coast Community Foundation was honored with the Award of Excellence for Outstanding Humanitarian Service by America’s Blood Centers (ABC) for its support of SunCoast Blood Bank (SCBB), at ABC’s national conference in Palm Springs, CA. This award recognizes a community organization that encourages the spirit of volunteerism among citizens in their community. Gulf Coast was selected from a field of 70 nominees nation-wide.

The Florida Association of Blood Banks honored SCBB Blood Bank (SCBB) with seven awards during FABB’s annual conference held in Sarasota in June.

Sarasota Memorial Hospital (SMH) was awarded the Hospital Partnership Award for the longstanding and collaborative partnership with SCBB. SMH in conjunction with SCBB, also received the FABB innovation Award for the implementation of AIM software, a benchmarking tool that helps hospitals track blood utilization and patient outcomes.

John Horne, owner of Anna Maria Oyster Bar received the prestigious Dorothy C. Smith R.N. Award for challenging the community at large to support their local blood bank. Horne leverages the popularity of his restaurants by hosting two successful blood drives a year for SCBB, and participates in SCBB’s League of Lifesaver Program, an immensely popular incentive program.

SCBB was awarded the Most Creative Donor Center Award for its Boots vs. Badges campaign, a friendly rivalry between law enforcement and firefighters to see which can collect the most units of blood during the slow months of summer.

Fawcett Memorial Hospital was recognized with the Hospital Donor Group Achievement Award. Over the past year, Fawcett Memorial has hosted six drives and collected more than 170 units of blood.

Leslie Collier of Sarasota Military Academy was recognized as the Donor Chairperson of the Year. Using the core principals of the military to appeal to student sense of duty, Collier coordinates five, two-day drives per year and monthly platelet drives. Academy students donated 637 units of blood during the school year.

Desoto High School in Arcadia received the High School Achievement Award for the most donors for a school of its size, with 647 students and faculty donating during the school year.
