March Collection Exhibitions
In MoMA’s new exhibition series for 2023, galleries will premiere on the first Friday of every month—when the Museum stays open to all until 8:00 p.m. and offers free admission to New Yorkers for UNIQLO NYC Nights
Sandra Mujinga’s Flo
Gallery 213Opening Mar 3
Sandra Mujinga’s larger-than-life hologram Flo—a new addition to MoMA’s collection, on view in North America for the first time—makes a case for being hidden in plain sight in an era of endless digital footprints. Flo addresses the threat of bodily erasure and surveillance technologies by proposing invisibility as a strategy for survival.
Limits of Control
Gallery 214Opening March 3
This gallery will address how information and infrastructure are deployed to shape our every move, from regimes of surveillance and censorship to traffic control.
New Acquisitions on View
In addition to the above collection exhibitions, this month two new contemporary acquisitions will also be on view for the first time at MoMA:
Taobao Village – Smallacre City
West LobbyOn view soon
This digital panorama—produced by the Beijing-based firm Drawing Architecture Studio—is a design commentary on the rural urbanism of e-commerce labor in China. It offers a critical response to Frank Lloyd Wright’s utopian, anti-urban design of 1934 for Broadacre City, which is also in MoMA’s collection.
Salam Tower, Doha
Floor 3On view soon
Shanghai-based artist Cui Jie creates an otherworldly depiction of Salam Tower, a waterfront skyscraper built as part of Qatar’s redevelopment efforts after the oil crisis of 1979. The edifice is interwoven with symbols from socialist monuments in China and Europe. A leading member of the post-1980s generation of Chinese artists, Jie focuses on painting, design, and the history of modernism, capitalism, and communism around the world.
Support for the collection is provided by the Annual Exhibition Fund.
