Cleveland Ballet Orchestra make it’s stunning debut in Florida!

Cleveland Ballet is an emerging ballet company that has been making waves in the dance world since its founding eight years ago. The company presents approximately 26-30 performances each season, with 16 of those performances held at Playhouse Square, where the company is the resident dance company. Cleveland Ballet has expanded its reach outside of Ohio and is making its Broward Center for the Arts debut in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with a one-night-only performance of Momentum!

The Broward Center is one of the most visited performance theaters in the world, and Artistic Director and Co-Founder Gladisa Guadalupe said that presenting Cleveland Ballet’s talented dancers on this world-renowned stage is an honor. Momentum! includes excerpts from Margo Sappington’s Rodin Mis en Vie, where the dancers embody living statuary, Don Quixote’s Pas de deux, and the White Swan Pas de deux from Swan Lake. There are also two original works by Artistic Director Gladisa Guadalupe: a classical quintet choreographed to Schubert’s Piano Sonata No. 13 in A major, Allegro, and a one-act ballet Momentum, set to Mendelssohn’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in G minor.

Cleveland Ballet is excited to offer a season closing performance that introduces a new orchestra, the Cleveland Ballet Orchestra. The company will be granted the rights for the first time to perform one of the most celebrated ballets in the history of dance, Serenade, by The George Balanchine Trust. This work symbolizes many of the principles Cleveland Ballet was founded on – creativity, originality, passion, grace, and moving forward the concept of what ballet can be. In addition to Serenade, the company will introduce a new work to the modern ballet cannon, the world premiere of Israeli composer Anna Segal’s Symphony of Life, choreographed by Ilia Zhivoi.

Excerpts from Rodin, Mis en Vie

Choreography by Margo Sappington

Original Music by Michael Kamen

Age of Bronze performed by Zachary Catazaro

Torso of Adele performed by Madison Campbell

The Athlete performed by Levian Mondville and Bruno Palheta

A choreographic game of ‘statues,’ Margo Sappington’s Rodin, Mis en Vie takes inspiration from the great sculptor Auguste Rodin. The ballet presents a continuing view of the studio of the famed sculptor who believed that the entire body, not merely the face, was the mirror to the soul. Ms. Sappington has transformed the potential for movement into an actuality by having each dancer represent the figures created by Rodin. In these excerpts, the sculptures come to life to explore the human experiences that are embodied in them through dramatic and dynamic movement.

Grand Pas de Deux from Don Quixote

Staging by Gladisa Guadalupe after Marius Petipa

Music by Ludwig Minkus

Prince Siegfried sets out on a hunting trip, encountering a flock of swans and their Swan Queen Odette. Cleveland Ballet celebrates the culmination of its 8th season with a history making moment of its own. In an evening of timeless elegance and effervescence, the season ending performance offers not one, but three company firsts -its first performance of George Balanchine’s world-renowned Serenade, the world premiere of Israeli composer Anna Segal’s Symphony of Life, choreographed by Ilia Zhivoi, and the company’s first performances with the newly formed Cleveland Ballet Orchestra.

George Balanchine’s acclaimed seminal work – and his first ballet choreographed in America, set to Tchaikovsky’s rich, poignant Serenade for Strings in C Major, Op. 48, opens the evening and is the first work by the company to be performed with a live orchestra, the new Cleveland Ballet Orchestra. Coupled with this historical groundbreaking work is the world premiere of the company’s first commissioned score – Anna Segal’s Symphony of Life with choreography by Ilia Zhivoi. Symphony of Life is Cleveland Ballet’s seventh commissioned ballet, its first commissioned score and second ballet performed with a live orchestra. Conductor Caleb Young makes his debut at Playhouse Square, as does violinist Alexandra Preucil (who has worked with the Ballet before).

A program of poetic grace, vulnerability and independence, Cleveland Ballet offers two performances only. Company Co-Founder and Artistic Director Gladisa Guadalupe said, “We are thrilled to close our eighth season with this exciting evening of dance. It has been our pleasure to be an active member of the Cleveland community and to offer artistic programs of creativity and originality, performances that not only promote the traditional works of the genre, but modern works that expand the boundaries of classical ballet. We know our audiences will enjoy this concert as much as our dancers enjoy performing it!”

Co-founder, CEO and President Dr. Michael Krasnyansky stated, “Cleveland Ballet is honored to have been granted the rights for the first time to perform one of the most celebrated ballets in the history of dance by The George Balanchine Trust. This work symbolizes many of the principles Cleveland Ballet was found on – creativity, originality, passion, grace and moving forward the concept of what ballet can be. We are thrilled to offer this masterpiece in our season closing performances, as well as introduce a new work to the modern ballet cannon.”
