“Yeah, But Not Right Now” at SoHo Playhouse announces additional weekly Saturday performance and upcoming special guests

The current schedule is as follows:

Thursday – Friday at 7pm and Saturday at 7pm and 9pm.

Will you still like Broadway’s A.J. Holmes after he tells you all the worst, most embarrassing, humiliating, potentially irredeemable parts about himself? The lies, the indiscretions, the fact that he legally changed his first name to “Broadway’s”? Join A.J. (sorry, Broadway’s) as he tries to move past his crippling need for constant validation… in front of an audience. He’s been on stage and screen, but has he ever been… himself? And really, should he? He’ll be whoever you want him to be, but please hold your applause. It will only encourage him.

Following a sold-out run at Edinburgh Fringe and The Adelaide Fringe Festival, in this original show of songs, stories, and stand-up, A.J. will attempt to win your affection the only way he knows how…by putting on a musical.

Directed by Caitlin Cook, Yeah, But Not Right Now has sound design by Craig Bundy and lighting design by Brandon Bogle. The scenic consultant is three-time Tony Award-winner Scott Pask, and the costume consultant is Jama McMahon.

A.J Holmes will also participate on a Comic Con Panel at The Javitts Center on the making of Yeah, But Not Right Now on October 10from 3:30-4:30pm with director Caitlin Cook and sound designer Craig Bundy.

“I basically grew up in a musical: constantly performing, bursting into song, strangers on the street seamlessly joining into perfectly choreographed dance numbers,” jokes A.J. Holmes. “So, obviously, I had to put on a one-man musical about my failed attempts towards emotional maturity, cringeworthy coming-of-age mishaps, ill-fated romantic entanglements, and crippling need for constant validation… all for an adoring audience, of course.”

Holmes played of Elder Cunningham in The Book of Mormon on Broadway, The West End, and Australia for the Melbourne and Sydney productions. He is also a co-founding member of StarKid Productions, co-composing the music for A Very Potter Musical and Twisted: The Musical. Holmes has also written for South Park.

“I first saw A.J. at the Adelaide festival last year before it all came to a sudden halt,” said the Playhouse’s Producing Artistic Director Darren Lee Cole. “I can’t think of a better show to reopen our theatre…smart, uplifting, insightful, and most importantly, fun.”

Emmy and Golden Globe Awards-winner Darren Criss agrees: “A.J. has never ceased to make me feel like I suck at so, so many things. His talent has always made me simultaneously frustrated at my own inabilities as well as totally inspired to get my s#@t together. So, f#@k you, A.J. Holmes. You’re incredible.”

Of Yeah, But Not Right Now and A.J. Holmes, The Sydney Morning Herald raved, “Five Stars! He’s hilarity incarnated. He has the audience in gales of laughter.” The Daily Review cheered, “Absolutely hysterical and entirely endearing,” and The Daily Telegraph said, “Five Stars! Riotously funny.”

Yeah, But Not Right Now plays Thursday – Friday at 7pm and Saturday at 7pm and 9pm.

SoHo Playhouse’s Covid-19 Policy

Under the policy, guests will need to be fully vaccinated with an FDA or WHO authorized vaccine to attend a show and show proof of vaccination at their time of entry into the theatre with their valid ticket. “Fully vaccinated” means the performance date must be at least 14 days after the second dose of a two-dose COVID-19 vaccine, or at least 14 days after a single-dose COVID-19 vaccine.
Mask use will be required per current CDC guidelines.

A.J. Holmes (writer/performer) is a composer, singer, songwriter, comedian, improviser, and actor. Broadway/West End Credits include Elder Cunningham in The Book of Mormon. Other theatre credits include Dr. Frankenstein in the national tour of Young Frankenstein and Henry in Next to Normal (Arizona Theatre Co. & SJ Rep). Film credits include Flop Stoppers and The Wayward Guide for the Untrained Eye in collaboration with the comedy group The Tin Can Brothers, as well as Ethan Kuperberg’s seminal classic, Doppelgänger. As a composer, A.J. has worked on several shows with StarKid Productions (Twisted, A Very Potter Musical, Me and My Dick), all of which can be found on the hit website, YouTube. A.J. served as a consultant in the writer’s room on Season 21 of South Park. A.J. spends his time writing silly songs and sometimes remembers to write them down. A.J. lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.


Caitlin Cook (director) is a LA-born, NYC-based, Oxford-educated, hyphen-addicted director, producer, composer, singer, songwriter, comedian, and writer. A fierce champion of mixed media and genre-bending works of art, Caitlin has carved out a space for herself smack-dab in the center of the Venn diagram between comedy, music, theatre, and visual art. She has brought this approach and shows like Death Wish and Good Luck Out There, Human to the Edinburgh Fringe, Brighton Fringe, Hollywood Fringe, HBO’s Women in Comedy Festival, New York Comedy Festival, High Plains Comedy Festival, off-Broadway theatres, strangers’ living rooms, and even a houseboat once—and garnered rave reviews from critics, peers, and audiences alike (the houseboat’s owners were especially complimentary). When back in New York, she produces two live stand-up, music, and variety shows: Fake Birthday at Littlefield and Good God at the Sultan Room. Caitlin has two albums out on all streaming platforms—Zinger-Songwriter and Betty Pitch—and encourages you to blast those bangers.

SoHo Playhouse (Darren Lee Cole, Artistic Director) has been one of Off-Broadway’s primary venues for new plays for the past 80 years. Formerly Vandam Playhouse, the theatre has been home to countless dreams and movements. Many actors, directors, choreographers, production designers, theatre managers, technicians, and producers all received their start at SoHo Playhouse. Jeremy Wein (Associate Producer) is a producer based in New York. He is the founder of Play-PerView, ThisMyShow Industries and the NYC Podcast Festival. Additional producing credits include Open Mike Eagle: Anime, Trauma, + Divorce: Live Processing Event (Dynasty Typewriter) Kevin McDonald: ALIVE (Theatre Row, Dynasty Typewriter), Neva (Brooklyn College), Godspell (2011 Broadway revival) Faux Snow (Thespis Theater Festival), and Take Me Home (Incubator Arts Project, Associate Producer), and the 2012 documentary “The Bitter Buddha” (Co-Producer). He recently produced the debut album for The U.S. Open (featuring Shawn Randell, William Jackson Harper, Steven Boyer, Diana Oh, Jeff Biehl, and Bobby Moreno and engineered by Grammy nominee and former They Might Be Giants member Tony Maimone), which will be released later this year.
