Zoe’s lyrics in her second single Girls Like Us celebrates loving yourself, whilst sending a message of solidarity to girls feeling the pressures of society and sends a middle finger to impossible beauty standards. We see this attitude in Zoe’s recent viral #girlslikeus TikTok challenge, where Zoe encouraged fans to take off their make-up whilst writing positive words about themselves on the mirror and accepting themselves as they are.

Designed to inspire and empower more women to enter the industry, Abbey Road Equalise’s International Women’s Day virtual festival has been underway for the past week, running free online talks, mentor sessions and masterclasses in the lead up to IWD 2021.

The Abbey Road Equalise IWD Festival will also provide the opportunity to book free one-to-one mentoring sessions from a wide range of women who have carved a career in music beyond the recording studio and stage. They’ve assembled a cast of women who have forged a career within the music industry, so you can explore some of the different roles that exist and benefit from 121 mentoring to help you get started.

To apply, send a short video to equalise explaining who you’d like to meet, the reason why and what you’d hope to get from the session.

Hailed by GQ for her ‘witty and brutally honest lyrics’, North London singer-songwriter Mae Muller is speaking for a new generation of young women through her music. On her recent EP no one else, not even you, Mae’s frank and relatable lyrics empowered her fans whilst being intertwined with contagious pop melodies and production.

On lead track dependent, we see Mae open up about her personal reservations when it comes to falling in love and suddenly losing your independence, which she cherishes. On other songs like fan favourite Anticlimax, Mae uses more tongue in cheek lyrics: ‘Why did I ever go back? Am I crazy? I must have gone mad. All my friends say I’m better than that. ‘Cause you don’t have a job and you’re sh*t in the sack’.

Whatever the song, Mae is sure to contain her usual honesty when it comes to love, helping fans to feel like they are not alone. Mae is often seen championing other women and their work, as seen in her online magazine where she spoke to a variety of women, including sex-positive blogger Chloe Howl, breaking some of the stigmas that surround the subject.

As part of Abbey Road Studios‘ International Women’s Day celebrations, they’re thrilled to be sharing their first Equalise studio session which they ran at the end of last year in Studio Three with Warner artist Hamzaa, Platoon’s Kali Claire, producer Melle Brown and musician, Cynesha Brown. The session was engineered by Marta Di Nozzi and Chris James Parker.

These sessions have been created to inspire and encourage more young women into production and engineering. The mini-documentary reveals insights into their working habits; from how they begin a recording session, their creative processes and their tips and tricks, to the struggles they’ve faced and had to overcome due to being a female artist, musician or producer.
