Hermitage Museum Foundation Director, art historian and theoretician Joachim Pissarro discusses Catherine the Great and her unique friendship with philosopher, art critic, and writer Denis Diderot. This program is presented in partnership with the National Arts Club in New York as part of a three-program series.
Joachim Pissarro has been the Bershad Professor of Art History and Director of the Hunter College Galleries (CUNY) since 2007. He is a Partner of Parallel Projects: an architecture, design, curatorial, and consultancy firm. He received his M. Phil. in History of Art from Courtauld Institute, London and his Ph.D. in History of Art from the University of Texas, Austin. Pissarro’s dissertation Cezanne/Pissarro, Johns/Rauschenberg: Comparative Studies on lntersubjectivity in Modern Art, was published in 2005 by Cambridge University Press. He has taught at Yale University, Osaka University, and Sydney University. Pissarro has held curatorial positions at the Kimbell Art Museum, Fort Worth; the Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven; and The Museum of Modern Art, New York. The last two exhibitions he curated were “Crystals in Art: Ancient to Today” at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, AK and Olga Picasso at the Musée Picasso in Paris. The latter exhibition, “Olga Picasso,” traveled to the Pushkin Museum in Fall 2018, then to Museo Picasso, Malaga in Spring 2019 and CAIXAForum, Madrid in Summer 2019. His latest book, Aesthetics of the Margins/ The Margins of Aesthetics (Penn State University) co-authored by David Carrier, was published in 2019.
