During this human pause, film composer Paul Cantelon (Everything is Illuminated, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, W, The Other Boleyn Girl, At Eternity’s Gate, The Visit and more) has been busy, releasing two collections of music, Repose and Wildwood. Both EPs are available as FREE DOWNLOADS on Bandcamp and include an option to donate with all the proceeds going to Los Angeles food banks.
“After witnessing the heroic efforts of the first responders as well as seeing those less fortunate struggling with the repercussions from the pandemic, I wanted to create something that might, in some small way, help bring them some respite from it all. As a writer of music for film, I am a small cog in a big, beautiful, machine of many moving parts and so stepping away from that amidst the quarantine has allowed me to reconnect with the simple pleasure of creating music for music’s sake.”
Repose is hopefully a small reflection of that moment as well as being music to help quiet the mind during these anxious times. Written as a series of sketches for a suite, Paul’s second quarantine release Wildwood was recorded during a visit to London where Paul and his daughter, harpist Florence Astley, performed together for the first time at Leighton House in Holland Park. An accomplished musician in her own right, Florence Astley studied harp at the Royal College of Music in London as well as piano at the Royal Welsh College of Music in Cardiff.

The EP, inspired by the English countryside and the wildflowers that seemingly grow against the odds, was something Paul had been thinking about releasing for some time, but work commitments always seemed to get in the way so naturally, he is finally thrilled to release Wildwood into the universe. In many way, Wildwood is a sister record to Repose both in its musical form and visual style. All of the photography and design were created by life-long friend and artist Jason Armstrong Beck.
Beyond his film work, in recent years Paul has performed live on several occasions with his wife , grammy-nominated singer Angela McCluskey as well as accompanying cellist Yo-Yo Ma for an exclusive performance of Paul’s original compositions and works from the standard cello/piano repertoire. In 2016, Paul also arranged the music and accompanied Michael Stipe for his performance at the David Bowie Tribute in Carnegie Hall was well as appearing with Michael and Karen Elson on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. Most recently Paul has recorded with musician and friend Joseph Arthur as well
as rapper A$AP Rocky.
