FRIDAY, JULY 5, 8 P.M. – ANDRIS NELSONS AND BSO OPEN THEIR 2019 TANGLEWOOD SEASON WITH EMANUEL AX
BSO Music Director Andris Nelsons,[Andris Nelsons] who will conduct 13 Tanglewood performances from July 5 to 28, leads the Boston Symphony Orchestra in its Opening Night concert of the 2019 Tanglewood season with Tanglewood favorite Emanuel Ax as soloist in Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 22 in E-flat, K.482. Written in 1785, it is one of the series of unique and innovative concertos the composer wrote to establish his reputation with the concertgoing public soon after moving to Vienna from his native Salzburg. To conclude the program, Mr. Nelsons leads the orchestra in Mahler’s Symphony No. 5, a sprawling, all-consuming work that the composer described as “chaos, which is constantly giving birth to new worlds and promptly destroying them again.”

SATURDAY, JULY 6, 8 P.M. – ANNE-SOPHIE MUTTER JOINS MR. NELSONS AND BSO
The following evening, Saturday, July 6, at 8 p.m., Maestro Nelsons once again takes the podium  [ Anne-Sophie Mutter ]in the Shed to conduct the BSO in a program that opens with American composer Joan Tower’s Fanfare for the Uncommon Woman No. 1 for brass and percussion, written in 1986 and inspired by Copland’s famous Fanfare for the Common Man. Renowned violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter then takes the stage for the BSO’s first Tanglewood performance of André Previn’s Violin Concerto, Anne-Sophie, which was written for and dedicated to her, and which is being performed in celebration of the composer, who passed away in February. The program concludes with Dvořák’s beloved Symphony No. 9, From the New World.

SUNDAY, JULY 7, 2:30 P.M. – JOHN WILLIAMS, ANNE-SOPHIE MUTTER, AND THE BOSTON POPS CELEBRATE MR. WILLIAMS’ ICONIC FILM MUSIC
Drawing from her soon-to-be-released Deutsche Grammophon recording Across the Stars, violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter returns to the Shed for the second consecutive day to perform selections from John Williams’ iconic film scores, in brilliant newly arranged improvisations created especially for her by the composer who conducts the Boston Pops Orchestra. The program, which also features conductor David Newman, includes music from Star Wars and Memoirs of a Geisha, as well as the haunting melodies of Schindler’s List.

TANGLEWOOD LEARNING INSTITUTE EVENTS

The launch of the Tanglewood Learning Institute in summer 2019 represents a new chapter of dynamic and stimulating programs for the famed 82-year-old summer music festival, alongside its traditional schedule of major performances by the Boston Symphony, Boston Pops, and Tanglewood Music Center orchestras, as well as a Popular Artist series in the Koussevitzky Music Shed, and chamber music, large ensemble, and recital programs in Ozawa Hall.

Saturday, July 6, 5 p.m., Ozawa Hall – Madeleine K. Albright

Explore nation-building in the 21st century with Madeleine K. Albright, Secretary of State (1997–2001), and one of the foremost diplomats of our time. This keynote speech and moderated Q&A are inspired by the July Madeleine Albright13 performance of Giuseppe Verdi’s monumental Requiem with vocal soloists, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the Tanglewood Festival Chorus, led by BSO Music Director Andris Nelsons. One of Italy’s greatest composers, Verdi was also a beloved politician whose music and activism contributed to the political unification of the nation in the mid-19th century. The Big Idea presentations feature some of the world’s greatest thinkers and luminaries, who dive into the big ideas of our time through dynamic presentations that investigate a diverse array of subjects and perspectives. Each talk illuminates the enduring vitality of music and uniquely contextualizes the themes of our concert repertoire.

Meow MeowPostmodern diva Meow Meow brings her unique brand of musical mayhem to Tanglewood in the first of a three-year collaboration with TLI. Expect the unexpected in this cleverly curated evening, beginning at 8 p.m. in Ozawa Hall, as the tragi-comedienne mixes French song and German cabaret with music by Piazzolla, Radiohead, Amanda Palmer, and unforgettable original work. Full Tilt performances throughout the summer feature nonconventional, subversive performances that are exhilarating, hypnotizing, and intensely human.

Friday, July 5, 4 p.m., Linde Center, Studio E – Benoît Rolland, Bow Maker

Benoît Rolland—a 2012 MacArthur Fellow and a Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres—is one of the world’s preeminent bow makers in the French tradition. He counts Yo-Yo Ma, Anne-Sophie Mutter, and Leonidas Kavakos among the leading soloists and chamber musicians who have used his bows. At 4 p.m. in the Linde Center’s Studio E, he leads an exploration of the art and science of bow-making and offers a sneak peek at his new conducting batons. Meet the Makers presentations feature public conversations with some of the world’s most celebrated artists in a variety of genres, diving deeply into the creative processes and inspirations behind their most daring, original work.

What is a postmodern diva? In this case, a singer, actress, dancer, and performance artist with degrees in law, German, and fine art. Born “in a Berlin bar,” Meow Meow has circumnavigated the globe with her unique form of tragicomic musical mayhem. As part of a new three-year collaboration with TLI, she joins us at 1:30 p.m. in the Linde Center’s Studio E to discuss her artistry and Pandemonium, her Ozawa Hall performance to be presented later the same evening.

Joan TowerAs a contemporary American composer, performer, conductor, and educator, Joan Tower has done it all, and she is still hard at work. Attendees at this 4:30 p.m. session in the Linde Center’s Studio E will learn more about her inspirations, the creative process, the wisdom that comes after more than five decades of work, and her Fanfare for the Uncommon Woman No. 1, which is featured in the July 6 BSO performance in the Shed.

Ryan Speedo Green Ryan Speedo Green is an American bass-baritone who performs for major opera companies around the world and whose journey from a tough upbringing in Virginia to the stage of the Metropolitan Opera is chronicled in Sing for Your Life: A Story of Race, Music, and Family by Daniel Bergner. A member of the ensemble of the Wiener Staatsoper since September 2014, he appears in the Linde Center’s Studio E. Thursday afternoon ShopTalks presentations feature candid, informal discussions on life, music, and the future of the field with conductors, composers, soloists, and unsung heroes.

CINEMATICS
Sunday, July 7 – The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse
The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, a 1962 World War II drama, features a love theme and score by André Previn that are among the most memorable in the history of cinema. This film screening, at 7 p.m. in the Linde Center’s Studio E, is part of Tanglewood’s summer-long commemoration of Mr. Previn. The Sunday-evening Cinematics film series, presented in collaboration with Berkshire International Film Festival, is designed to inspire attendees to explore the unique relationship between music, cinema, and the human spirit. This curated series of films will expand perceptions of classical music and provide emotional depth to the concertgoing experience. Presented in collaboration with the Berkshire Film Festival.

Attendees will learn about the artistry, career, and influence of legendary film composer John Williams, in advance of the 2:30 p.m. Boston Pops performance in the Shed with violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter, which is dedicated to his music and conducted, in part, by Mr. Williams himself. These engaging, informal pre-concert activities span centuries, cross genres, and deepen the concert-going experience. Free of charge to ticket-holders for the Sunday 2:30 p.m. concert.

WEDNESDAY, JULY 10 – VIOLINIST HILARY HAHN PERFORMS ALL-BACH SOLO RECITAL
On Wednesday, July 10, at 8 p.m., acclaimed violinist Hilary Hahn performs a solo all-Bach program, including Sonata No. 2 in A minor and No. 3 in C, and the Partita No. 3 in E. These works constitute half of the composer’s six towering suites for solo violin, which were completed by Bach in 1720 and are considered some of the most challenging and transcendent works for the instrument in the repertoire, showcasing Bach’s unparalleled combination of technical intricacy and expressive depth.

THURSDAY, JULY 11 – VENICE BAROQUE ORCHESTRA AND MANDOLINIST AVI AVITAL PERFORM WORKS BY VIVALDI AND CONTEMPORARIES
On Thursday, July 11, at 8 p.m., the Venice Baroque Orchestra, featuring Israeli mandolin player Avi Avital—who has brought new attention to his instrument with his sensational performances in recent years—presents a program centered on five brilliant concertos by Antonio Vivaldi, with additional concertos by fellow Italian Baroque composers Francesco Geminiani, Tomaso Albinoni, and Giovanni Paisiello. The concert also features solo recorder player Anna Fusek.

MONDAY, JULY 8 – ANDRIS NELSONS LEADS TANGLEWOOD MUSIC CENTER ORCHESTRA
The Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra, composed of the TMC’s outstanding young Fellows, opens its 2019Thomas Rolfs season in Ozawa Hall Monday, July 8 at 8 p.m. Andris Nelsons and TMC Conducting Fellows lead the ensemble in a program to include Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 1, which the composer completed in 1925 when he was just 18 years old as his graduation piece for the Petrograd Conservatory. The concert also features a world premiere: the TMC-commissioned Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra by German composer Detlev Glanert, with BSO principal trumpet player Thomas Rolfs as soloist. Opening the program is Tchaikovsky’s Shakespeare-inspired overture-fantasy Hamlet.

Brief Overview of 2019 Tanglewood Season
[Andris Nelsons]The 2019 Tanglewood season will see Boston Symphony Music Director Andris Nelsons in residence throughout the month of July, leading 14 programs, including a first for Tanglewood—a concert performance of Wagner’s complete Die Walküre with the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra and a star-studded cast, presented in three [Renée Fleming]concerts over a two-day period, July 27 & 28.  Tanglewood will also be the setting for the BSO’s Nelsons-led world premiere of Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Kevin PutsThe Brightness of Light, a work for voices and orchestra inspired by letters between Georgia O’Keeffe and Alfred Stieglitz; it was written especially for Renée Fleming and Rod Gilfry, who will be the featured soloists. Ms. Fleming, a favorite guest artist at Tanglewood since her BSO debut there in 1991, has been named the Koussevitzky Artist for the 2019 Tanglewood season. The BSO and Andris Nelsons open the orchestra’s summer season on Friday, July 5, with Mahler’s Symphony No. 5 and Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 22, with Emanuel Ax as soloist—the first of twenty BSO programs taking place throughout July and August.

[Andris Nelsons]Musical highlights of the season also include Copland’s Symphony No. 3, Debussy’s La Mer, Dvořák’s New World Symphony, Elgar’s Enigma Variations, Betsy Jolas’ A Little Summer Suite, Ravel’s La Valse and Daphnis and Chloé (complete), Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 2, Strauss’ “Dance of the Seven Veils” from Salome, Joan Tower’s Fanfare for the Uncommon Woman No. 1, and an Andris Nelsons-led Verdi Requiem, as well as works by Brahms, Gershwin, Mendelssohn, Schumann, and Stravinsky, among many other favorite composers.  The traditional season-ending finale of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, with a cast of acclaimed soloists and the Tanglewood Festival Chorus, James Burton, conductor, will be led by Giancarlo Guerrero; the program will open with Schoenberg’s Friede auf Erden (Peace on Earth) for unaccompanied chorus.  In another major highlight of the 2019 season, Yo-Yo Ma, who will be featured in three concerts during the 2019 Tanglewood season, will make a special solo appearance in the Shed, performing Bach’s Six Unaccompanied Cello Suites as part of his own two-year The Bach Project, in which Mr. Ma will perform Johann Sebastian Bach’s six suites for solo cello in 36 locations on six continents.  Opening the 2019 season on June 15, American Public Media’s popular Live from Here, with host, vocalist and mandolin virtuoso Chris Thile, will broadcast from Tanglewood for the second consecutive year. The 2019 Popular Artist Series includes Brian Wilson (6/16), Richard Thompson (6/21), Postmodern Jukebox (6/22), The Boston Pops Celebrates Queen with Marc Mandel (6/27), Earth, Wind & Fire (6/28), Rodrigo y Gabriela (6/30), Josh Groban (7/2), James Taylor and his All-Star Band (7/3 & 4), Train and the Goo Goo Dolls (8/5), Gladys Knight and The Spinners (8/28), Squeeze—The Squeeze Songbook Tour (8/29), Pat Benatar & Neil Giraldo and Melissa Etheridge (8/30), Ben Harper & The Innocent Criminals and Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue (8/31), and Reba McEntire (9/1).

HOW TO PURCHASE TICKETS AND ORDER A BROCHURE
Tickets for the 2019 Tanglewood season—regular-season ticket prices range from $12-$130*—are available through Tanglewood’s website, www.tanglewood.org, through Symphony Charge at 888-266-1200, and at the Symphony Hall Box Office at 301 Massachusetts Avenue, Boston, MA. Tickets will also be available for purchase in person at the Tanglewood Box Office at Tanglewood’s Main Gate on West Street in Lenox, MA, beginning June 12. American Express, Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and cash are all accepted at the Tanglewood Box Office. Tickets purchased online or over the phone are also subject to a $6.50 handling fee. *Please note: Ticket prices for additional popular artist concerts to be featured during the 2019 Tanglewood season will be set when the that schedule is announced over the coming months. FREE AND DISCOUNTED LAWN TICKETS, ACTIVITIES FOR MUSIC LOVERS OF ALL AGES, AND MORE
The BSO’s $20 tickets for attendees under 40 will be available during the 2019 Tanglewood season for select performances; these tickets are available starting at the end of May on a first-come, first-served basis through www.tanglewood.org and through Symphony Charge. Eligible patrons may purchase up to two tickets per show and must provide proof of age when picking up their tickets at “will call” in order to receive the discount. Tickets for Saturday-morning rehearsals range from $14-$34; certain blackout dates will apply. Tanglewood is pleased to offer free lawn tickets for children and young people age 17 and younger; up to four free children’s lawn tickets are available per parent/legal guardian per concert at the Tanglewood Box Office on the day of the concert, as all patrons, regardless of age, must have a ticket. Please note that the free lawn ticket policy does not apply to organized groups. For Popular Artists concerts, free lawn tickets are only available for children under age 2.

Saturday-Morning Rehearsals in the Shed allow audiences to watch the BSO in rehearsal. Saturday-Morning Rehearsal Shed seats, priced $24-$34, are reserved/ticketed seating only, with $14 general admission Lawn seating; these rehearsals begin at 10:30 a.m., with a Pre-Rehearsal Talk at 9:30 a.m. free to Rehearsal ticket holders. A discount of 15% off the regular ticket price will be applied to orders with a minimum of four Rehearsals. Tickets for Saturday-Morning Rehearsals can be purchased in person at Symphony Hall, over the phone at 888-266-1200, or online at www.tanglewood.org starting February 10, and at the Tanglewood Box Office (beginning June 12).

Tanglewood’s Lawn Pass Book contains 11 tickets that are valid for all regular and specially priced BSO and Pops concerts in the Koussevitzky Music Shed and Ozawa Hall. Lawn Pass Books are priced at $190 through June 23 and $200 thereafter. The Tanglewood Grass Pass is a season lawn pass priced at $225; these tickets are non-transferable. In addition, Year-round Berkshire County residents of Massachusetts may purchase a Berkshire Resident Season Lawn Pass priced at $100; local residents must show a valid Massachusetts license which is required to obtain a photo ID pass.  Tickets for the Lawn Pass Book may be purchased in advance and make great gifts. Grass Passes and Berkshire Resident Season Lawn Passes are available for purchase in person at the Main Gate Box Office beginning June 12; Lawn Pass Book tickets and Berkshire/Grass passes are not valid for Popular Artist concerts.

TANGLEWOOD PATRON ACTIVITIES FOR ADULTS/CHILDREN/FAMILIES: PATRON PERKS AND EDUCATION OPTIONS, PLUS YOGA ON THE LAWN EVERY SATURDAY
Summer Sundays Return to Tanglewood in 2019 and Other Family Friendly Activities
Summer Sundays will return to Tanglewood, bringing activities for all ages to the festival grounds every Sunday afternoon throughout the season.  The Tanglewood grounds will open at noon on Sundays for an afternoon of kid-friendly events including musical arts and crafts, temporary tattoos, and other special activities; offerings for adults will include wine and food tastings in pop-up tents found throughout the grounds, and lectures that will appeal to all ages. Summer Sundays also offers “What’s That Sound?“, a chance to see and hear various instruments of the orchestra up close, from bassoon to harp, organ to alpine horn, and “Watch and Play,” an interactive musical performance designed to engage children, ages 3-10, in the Tanglewood musical experience.  In addition to the Summer Sunday offerings, Tanglewood provides special programs for kids, such as the popular Kids’ Corner, a craft-related project supervised and supported by BSO staff on weekends. Admission to Summer Sundays and family-friendly activities is free to all BSO concert ticket holders; activities will take place 1 p.m. each Sunday at the Tanglewood Visitor Center.

UnderScore Fridays and Friday- and Saturday-evening Prelude Concerts
The orchestra will offer three UnderScore Fridays performances on July 19, August 2, and August 9; this program features BSO musicians discussing the evening’s program from the stage prior to these Friday evening concerts at 8 p.m.  Admission to UnderScore Fridays is free to all BSO concert ticket holders.  Friday-evening Prelude Concerts, at 6 p.m. in Ozawa Hall, feature BSO musicians in small ensemble and chamber music settings. Saturday-evening Prelude Concerts, which will be presented primarily in Studio A of the Center for Music and Learning from July 6-August 17, feature Tanglewood Music Center Fellows in performance. Admission to Prelude Concerts is free to all BSO concert ticket holders.

One Day University on June 23

Tanglewood will partner with acclaimed lifelong learning series One Day University, for the ninth season. Award-winning professors from three renowned schools will present their best lecture in Ozawa Hall on Sunday, June 23, from 9:30 a.m. until 1:15 p.m. Founding Director of the Center for Presidential History at Southern Methodist University Professor Jeffrey Engel will present “American Immigration: What’s Fact and What’s Fiction”; Bard College Professor of Literature and Joseph Luzzi will present “Three Remarkable Books That Changed America”; and Professor of Music at Georgetown University Anna Celenza will present “Three Musical Masterpieces That Changed America.” Price of admission is $159 including all three lectures. Yoga on the Lawn Every Saturday Morning During Open Rehearsals
Once again this summer, in collaboration with the Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health, Tanglewood is pleased to offer hour-long yoga classes taught by fully accredited Kripalu teachers from 10:15–11:15 a.m. on Saturday mornings (weather permitting). Located at the top of the lawn near the Tappan Manor House, these weekly classes are available at no additional charge to Saturday-morning BSO Rehearsal ticket-holders, on July 6, 13, 20, and 27, and August 3, 10, 17, and 24.

Walking Tours
Tanglewood offers free hour-long walking tours of Tanglewood’s grounds and performance spaces to the general public from July 6-August 25 on Tuesdays at 1:30 p.m., Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m., Saturdays at 1:30 p.m. and Sundays at 12:30 p.m. (on Sundays, only available for ticket holders only). Walking Tours begin at the Visitors Center at the Tanglewood Manor House.

TANGLEWOOD DINING OPTIONS
The Highwood Manor House will be open to the public for dinner on Friday and Saturday, and for Sunday brunch. Highwood offers an elegant buffet dinner at a fixed price of $65 per person and a Sunday Brunch buffet for $45 (inclusive of tax; 18% gratuity will be added to the bill). Cocktails, bottled wine, and à la carte desserts are also available. For reservations, call 413-637-4486 at least 48 hours in advance. Highwood will also be open post-concert on Sundays, weather permitting, for cocktails and light appetizers. Tanglewood also offers two casual dining locations—the casual fare of the Tanglewood Café and the Tanglewood Grille featuring Taste of the Berkshires with offerings from local favorite restaurants. Additionally, guests may also order picnics to enjoy on the spacious groups in advance online at tanglewood.org/dining or by phone at 413-637-5152. For those attending Shed concerts, light snacks and beverages are available for purchase at the Shed and Tappan Shacks and the Shed Beer Garden whenever the grounds are open for concerts.

For those patrons picnicking and listening to the concerts on the lawn, Tanglewood offers Lawn Chair Rentals, for a fee of $5, available by the beer garden during Shed concerts, and at the Bernstein Gate for Ozawa Hall performances.

BSO Phone and Tablet Apps and Mobile Web Offerings
The BSO’s free phone app provides concertgoers with a platform through which to interact with the Boston Symphony, Boston Pops, and Tanglewood.  A highlight of the app, “Watch & Listen,” provides users with a variety of concert-related content including audio podcasts, and multimedia video podcasts. The app also provides ticketing and schedule information, as well as practical information about, and planning your visit to, Symphony Hall. The app is available for download and installation on iPhone devices via the iTunes App Store, and on Android devices via Google Play.

The orchestra’s website, BSO.org, is also mobile-device compatible. Patrons can visit BSO.org on their mobile device to access performance schedules, purchase tickets as well as pre-performance food and beverages, download program notes, music clips, and concert previews, watch video exclusives, and make donations to the BSO—all in the palm of their hand.
