The Perlman Music Program/Suncoast receives a grant in amount of
$15,000 from Community Foundation of Sarasota County
SARASOTA, Fla. (October 24, 2018) — The Perlman Music Program/Suncoast (PMP/Suncoast) has been awarded a grant in the amount of $15,000 by the Community Foundation of Sarasota County, John J. Weiss Memorial Fund. This grant will help support three PMP/Suncoast programs throughout the 2018-2019 15th Anniversary Season: Itzhak Perlman – In The Fiddler’s House; the Perlman Music Program Sarasota Winter Residency; and the PMP/Suncoast Super Strings program.
PMP/Suncoast presents the premiere area appearance of Itzhak Perlman – In The Fiddler’s House – A Night of Klezmer on Monday, December 17 at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall. This is a special treat for the Sarasota community, offering fans of klezmer the opportunity to experience internationally-acclaimed violinist and PMP faculty member Itzhak Perlman perform a genre of music that is bit unique to local audiences. Mr. Perlman will be joined onstage by a full klezmer band.
The upcoming season also celebrates the 15th Anniversary Perlman Music Program Sarasota Winter Residency. Since 2004, Toby and Itzhak Perlman, along with their students, faculty and staff, have called the Suncoast their wintertime home-away-from-home. The 2018-2019 Winter Residency takes over the campus of USF Sarasota-Manatee from December 20, 2018 through January 5, 2019, with 17 days of intensive training and development for PMP students. Their efforts and talents are showcased through open orchestra and chorus rehearsals, master classes and works-in-progress recitals, held in a Performance Tent and offered to the public, free of charge.
Super Strings provides young, Florida string musicians, who play violin, viola, cello and bass, the opportunity to perform with the PMP String Orchestra under the baton of Itzhak Perlman. This year, 52 string students, ages 9-18, from 15 counties throughout Florida, will participate in Super Strings, scheduled for December 29, 2018 in the Performance Tent.
“In a time when state funding for the arts has been drastically cut, we are the grateful to The Community Foundation of Sarasota County for continuing to support our efforts in bringing exceptionally gifted PMP faculty and students to our area for education and outreach programs,” said Elizabeth Power, Executive Director of PMP/Suncoast.“ The grant also allows us to offer scholarships to Super Strings participants who are unable to afford the fee or need assistance with travel and lodging expenses.”
