About Ice Theatre of New York
Founded in 1984 by Moira North, Ice Theatre of New York (ITNY) has changed the face of figure skating by creating works that integrate the sensibilities of movement, music and art.  Its mission is to elevate dance on ice as a performance art. Through its performances in both traditional and site-specific venues, ITNY presents ice dance that opens one’s eyes to seeing skating in unexpected ways. ITNY was the first ice dance company to receive dance program funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, the New York State Council on the Arts and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.  In addition to building and performing works of artistic merit, ITNY also reaches out to the next generation of skaters and audiences through education, community outreach and training programs.

Elladj Baldé – Guest Artist
Elladj Baldé is a Competitive skater and performer from Quebec, Canada and a frequent guest performer with ITNY. He was born November 9, 1990 in Moscow to a Russian mother and a Guinean father, Ibrahim, from the village of Tombon, near Labé. His elder sister, Djulde, died from leukemia. After a year in Bonn, Germany during his sister’s treatment, the family moved to Canada in 1992. Elladj was introduced to skating at the age of seven by his mother. Though at first, he would hide his skates in an attempt to avoid practice, he began to love skating when he was ten. He is a 7-time Canadian National Senior Competitor, 2008 Canadian Junior Champion, and was the winner of the 2015 International Nebelhorn Trophy and received a standing ovation after his recent performance at the 2018 Canadian Nationals.

Kristi Yamaguchi – Honoree
Olympic champion Kristi Yamaguchi is a fourth-generation Japanese American. Her mother was born in an internment camp during World War II. Kristi had casts and braces on her feet from birth until about 2 years old to correct her feet and legs. She wanted to try skating after seeing a local ice show. She had fallen in love with the performances and the costumes, music, and lighting. It didn’t hurt that skating also helped Kristi with strengthening and coordination. Kristi’s favorite toy when she was a young girl was a Dorothy Hamill doll that she carried everywhere. Kristi started off skating both singles and pairs with Rudy Galindo. Together they won one Junior and two Senior Pair titles. In 1992 Kristi won the U.S. National Championships in singles and went on to win the Olympics in Albertville, France later that year. Kristi is also a two-time World Champion, four-time World Professional Champion, and she toured with Stars on Ice from 1993 to 2002. She is a NY Times best-selling author of her children’s books Dream Big Little Pig, It’s a Big World Little Pig, and Cara’s Kindness. She has also appeared in several movies, television shows, and created the Always Dream Foundation for children. The foundation inspires underserved children to reach for their dreams through innovative reading programs, and by advancing the cause of early childhood literacy. Yamaguchi is a woman of many talents. Not only an accomplished skater, but, she took home the mirror ball trophy in season 6 of Dancing with The Stars. Today, she is married to Bret Hedican, who was also a 1992 Olympian, in hockey. She lives in Alamo, California with her husband and two daughters.

The 2018 Home Season is supported, in part by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature. ITNY is also supported by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, in partnership with the City Council, and NYC Council Member Mark Levine.

Additionally, ITNY receives funding from Bloomberg Philanthropies, the Lisa McGraw Figure Skating Foundation, the Richard T. Button Foundation, the Victor C. and Clara C. Battin Foundation, the Will Sears Foundation, and its generous private patrons.
