Milcho Manchevski’s Bikini Moon (Fresh of its North American debut at Conquest) at Sarasota Film Festival

In Milcho Manchevski’s BIKINI MOON, a group of documentary filmmakers take a disturbed, creative and mentally ill homeless military veteran into their lives with at times dangerous, humorous, and potentially disastrous consequences.

As a narrative about a documentary, it’s a wonderfully ingenious narrative approach from Manchevski. But it is also a compelling single portrait of the homeless crisis—while set in New York—of great relevance to all of us. Billions’ Condola Rashad’s performance is compelling and convincing, as is the rest of the cast’s.

WHAT:         The Florida premiere of award-winning director Milcho Manchevski’s BIKINI MOON at the Sarasota Film Festival. Billed as “a documentary about a fairytale,” BIKINI MOON is an intriguing, engaging, multi-layered story, meticulously crafted, that both defies and reimagines genres.  It variously explores: the thin and porous lines between fantasy and reality; the plight of homeless veterans; and the fractured ideal of family. Produced by Munire Armstrong of YN Films and Anja Wedell of Czar Film, the film’s Director of Photography is Joshua Z Weinstein (MENASHE).

BIKINI MOON gives a provocative and convincing portrayal of an unstable woman trying to get her life together. Bikini (Condola RashadBillions; Master of None; Smash; the upcoming COME SUNDAY) plays a former marine with mental issues. She becomes the focus of interest for a documentary film crew who want to use her story for their movie. Kate (Sarah Goldberg, THE DARK KNIGHT RISES) is believable and heart-wrenching as the producer trying to save her. The documentary within the film is spellbinding as a vehicle for revealing the ripple effect of Bikini’s turbulent pond. New York City provides the perfect setting for exposing the variety of challenges faced by people struggling with mental illnesses. – Angela Ettinger
