“Ordinary And Extraordinary” Offers an Unprecedented Look Into the Design Process and Power of Innovative Ideas
USA-Bound Exhibit Premieres at Center for Architecture Sarasota
For Immediate Release, Sarasota, Fla . . . Ordinary and Extraordinary – An Architecture of Heightened Awareness opens January 30, 2018 at Center for Architecture Sarasota, the first stop on its tour throughout the USA. The exhibit presents the work of Brooks + Scarpa, one of the most innovative and celebrated architecture and design practices in the USA who are described as “working at the intersection of fine art and socially responsive, progressive design.”
The content of Ordinary and Extraordinary has been selected from more than three decades of work, and includes 150 rarely seen models, original sketches and drawings, 3D visualizations, and short films about the designers and their designs. It gives visitors an unprecedented look at the design process and the power of innovative ideas, especially those that have changed the conversation and execution of design. Brooks + Scarpa have addressed some of the most pressing issues of our time, building cost effective ‘green’ structures, creating community in urban environments and focusing on design solutions to climate change.
“Center for Architecture Sarasota is delighted to provide the first stop in this outstanding exhibit’s tour of the United States,” said David Lowe, chairman of the board of CFAS. “Brooks + Scarpa is truly an extraordinary group of design innovators and we are excited to offer the Sarasota community opportunities to experience the essence of their work.”
Events During the Exhibit
The exhibition, January 30-April 14, 2018, is free to the public and offers enticing reasons for multiple visits. On February 23 at 6:30 p.m. a trio of award-winning architects and professors will present a panel discussion entitled “Wicked Water.” Brooks + Scarpa principal Jeffrey Huber, AIA LEED AP will lead the discussion with Keith Van de Reit, AIA PhD, an award-winning architect for his innovative work in creating and engineering structures to better protect coastal communities against erosion and rising sea levels, and Tim Rumage, environmentalist and professor at Ringling College of Art and Design. Huber is part of the team recently honored with the 2018 AIA Honor Award for Regional & Urban Design for “Salty Urbanism: Sea Level Rise Adaptation Strategies for Urban Areas.” About that design the AIA jury wrote, “What a brilliant strategy that shows thought and sophistication. This is a series of toolboxes and frameworks giving each community a myriad of potential responses that could work for them as they work together. The nuanced, organic approach invites the community to really own a solution.”
The second special event during the exhibition is a conversation and book signing with Larry Scarpa, FAIA on March 16 at 6:30 p.m. Scarpa, a Central Florida native and graduate of the University of Florida School of Architecture, will discuss how the firm’s collaborative approach, design excellence and environmental stewardship has resulted in unique buildings of all types and garnered awards and praise from all quarters. Brooks + Scarpa was named the 7th Best Overall Architectural Firms in the United States by Architect Magazine.
