Highland Park Fest highlights importance of literacy, art

HIGHLAND PARK, Mich. – Did you know July is National Parks and Recreation month? Well, Legacy of Literacy, Inc. says “Get your play and reading on” at Literacy in the Park this Saturday July 22 from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. on the grounds of the historic McGregor Library (12244 Woodward Ave.) in Highland Park, Michigan.

Reading is the key to fun at this FREE daylong event. Kids read to volunteer listeners to earn tickets that can be used for pony rides, art activities, ice cream making, video games, music lessons, face painting, and much more. Each child will leave with a free backpack full of books and an event t-shirt.

A community stage will feature storytellers, musicians and authors including 10 year-old Knight Arts Challenge winner King Thomas Moore, and award-winning children’s author James Ransome.

The event is sponsored by Legacy of Literacy, Inc. in partnership with ArtOps. Over 70 community volunteers will volunteer their time to support more than 200 children from Highland Park and the surrounding area.

• Provide a literacy-focused ministry that promotes the love of reading as well as help develop competent and confident readers prepared to live and succeed in a global society.
• Empower children and families to view reading as an important way to share and access knowledge.
• Work alongside groups including schools, businesses, churches, and other community organizations to sponsor an array of literacy programs and services for all children and families.
