THIS SUMMER WITH THE DSO: 25TH ANNUAL SALUTE TO AMERICA CELEBRATION, TWO NIGHTS AT FORD HOUSE, HISTORIC TOUR OF ASIA, AND THE MUSIC OF PRINCE AT MEADOW BROOK AMPHITHEATRE

Detroit, (May 25, 2017) – The Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) will keep busy this summer, returning to Greenfield Village at The Henry Ford, the Edsel and Eleanor Ford House, and Meadow Brook Amphitheatre to present concerts both before and after embarking on the historic July tour of Japan and China.

First is Salute to America, one of Metro Detroit’s most popular Independence Day traditions. Celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, Salute to America takes place at Greenfield Village at The Henry Ford in Dearborn each night from Friday, June 30 through Monday, July 3. The four-concert series will be conducted by Associate Conductor and Phillip and Lauren Fisher Community Ambassador Michelle Merrill. The DSO is thrilled to share the stage with the Jazz Ambassadors of The US Army Field Band, and excited to present a program of patriotic music featuring everyone’s favorite finale: Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture, accompanied by cannon fire and followed by fireworks.

Next is the DSO’s eighth annual appearance on the grounds of the historic Edsel and Eleanor Ford House, a striking lakefront estate in Grosse Pointe Shores. The DSO will present two nights of outdoor concerts on Friday, July 7 and Saturday, July 8, conducted by Aram Demirjian. Friday evening’s program features pops and Hollywood favorites, including selections from The Wizard of Oz, Gladiator, Star Wars, and more; Saturday evening’s program features music by Walton, Handel, Haydn, Wagner, Tchaikovsky, and Stravinsky. Both performances will go out with the bang of live fireworks.

On Sunday, July 9, the DSO will present a free sendoff concert at Orchestra Hall before departing for Asia Tour 2017—a historic endeavor that marks the orchestra’s first-ever performances in China and its first tour of Japan in 20 years. The sendoff concert, conducted by Music Director Leonard Slatkin, will feature music the orchestra will play on tour, including Cindy McTee’s Double Play, Korngold’s violin concerto (with featured soloist Akiko Suwanai), and Copland’s Symphony No. 3. The concert will also be webcast for free via the DSO’s Live from Orchestra Hall series at dso.org/live and via Facebook Live.

Once Asia Tour 2017 concludes, the DSO will return to Meadow Brook Amphitheatre for a concert titled The Music of Prince, conducted by Brent Havens and featuring a live rock band and vocalist. The concert, which takes place Friday, August 25, pays tribute to the late Prince with an avalanche of purple funky hits: “Little Red Corvette,” “When Doves Cry,” “Raspberry Beret,” and more.

The concert grounds will open to the public at 6 p.m. each night. The 1st Michigan Colonial Fife and Drum Corps will parade the concert grounds at 6:45 p.m. The Jazz Ambassadors of the United States Army Field Band will give a pre-concert performance at 7:30, before joining the DSO for the main concert, which begins at 8:30.

Lawn seating is first-come, first-served, and seating is not provided—guests are encouraged to bring folding chairs and/or blankets. A cash bar, food options, and souvenirs will be available.

Salute to America is a rain or shine event.

Picnics are allowed but alcoholic beverages may not be brought onto the grounds. Coolers are welcome but will be subject to search.

General admission tickets are $20 for adults and $12 for children. Premium general admission tickets for lawn area closer to the stage are $50 per person, and also include reserved parking and a shuttle to the venue.
