“It’s not just about making a dance hit or the brand—I love engineering music of all time…I’ve done hip-hop tracks, glitch tracks, piano concertos, and dance hits. I think a large part of my fan base knows that, so this is for them. And if it’s not for them, then maybe I’ll attract some new fans who aren’t so E.D.M.”
— deadmau5 as told to Kia Makarechi, Vanity Fair (6/15/14)
Never one to take a conventional path, leading electronic music producer and songwriter deadmau5 embarked on a one-of-a-kind road trip leading up to the release of his new album while(1<2) (mau5trap/Astralwerks), out today, Tuesday, June 17. Earlier this month he put the pedal to the metal of his Purrari, his custom Nyan cat-wrapped Ferrari Spider 458 on the Gumball 3000 Rally for a drive from Miami to Ibiza and raised hundreds upon thousands of dollars contributed towards it’s charity The Gumball Foundation. His heavily chronicled escapades–which fans were able to follow in real time via his live.deadmau5.com platform– garnered him the prestigious ‘Spirit Of The Gumball’ Award. It also helped to propel while(1<2) to debut at at #1 dance and #4 overall iTunes charts today. Look for the album to be available physically and via streaming services on Tuesday, June 24. Also stay tuned for news of a limited edition vinyl coming soon.
Leading up to while(1<2)—a double-album collection of 25 tracks that together he truly feels is his first proper artist release–deadmau5 made four key tracks off the album available. First there was “Avaritia,” which premiered on Pete Tong’s Radio One show in mid-May. “He’s back. The internet menace Joel Zimmerman, aka deadmau5 has returned,” observed Lucas Sachs of YourEDM (5/17/14). “This exclusive preview of ‘Avaritia’ is derived from Pete Tong‘s radio show and a sample from the upcoming album; and let me be the first to express my excitement just with this first sneak-peek. A throbbing bass-line is amplified by the beautiful madness that are mau5′s percussion lines and organic synth atmosphere.”
Next came “Seeya,” with its rare vocal tracks courtesy of new mau5trap signing Colleen D’Agastino. “With a throbbing backbone, pitch-perfect vocals, and an irresistible dance-along chorus, this is feel good music at its coolest. And, well, it should be blasting now, tomorrow and all.summer.long”, wrote NYLON’s Jamie Wilson (5/26/14) As deadmau5 was about to launch on his adventure of a lifetime, the Gumball 3000 Rally, Rolling Stone premiered “Infra Turbo Pigcart Racer.” “An epic 10-minute track with a melody that nods to 8-bit without bending to glitch, the newest single pulls in soaring phasers, thump-backed vocals, a sample of speeding cars and more for a sound that only a man who simultaneously loathes dance music while pushing it forward can create”, touted Allegra Dimperio of Dancing Astronaut (6/3/14), while Matt Medved of Billboard (6/6/14) wrote, “Another week, another noteworthy new single from Joel’s upcoming album. Striking a more throwback tone and title than the other two singles premiered so far, this one sports a progressive lead over assorted electro bass gurgles and classic mau5 organ chords”.
Then came the unveiling of “Phantom’s Can’t Hang,” courtesy of Mashable. “…it’s instantly identifiable as classic deadmau5: gobs of clean synth over a massive prog-house beat that runs a little longer than nine minutes” wrote Chris Zeigler of The Verge (June 13).
Now the full modern-day electronic opus from one of the world’s most prolific producers is available for all via iTunes with other formats to follow next week.
