(Sarasota, FL) Art Center Sarasota’s 2016-2017 exhibition season, entitled “Common Ground,” continues with four new exhibits. “Classic Fantastic,” in Gallery Four, open to the public beginning January 26, is an open, all-media, all-subject juried exhibition juried by Shawn Pettersen, an artist, sculptor and fine arts technician at Ringling College of Art and Design. The other three galleries, with curated shows, opens February 2 “Marzipan,” in Gallery One, features a large-scale installation and other new works by Andrea Dasha Reich. “The Magic Circus,” in Gallery Two, features paintings influenced by circus memories by Robert Burridge. “ASALH: Black Muse 2017,” a curated exhibit of works by the member artists of the Association for the Study of African-American Life and History, is in Gallery Three, and The opening reception for all four exhibits is Thursday, February 2, 5-7 p.m. Art Center Sarasota is located at 707 N. In “Marzipan,” Andrea Dasha Reich exhibits several new works, including “Paradise,” a dazzling, 10-foot by 10-foot, multi-layered installation created from objects found in her studio. “It’s made with everything and the kitchen sink,” laughs Reich, who is celebrated for her innovative, multimedia artwork that is a woven interplay of rich color spectrums exploring “the depth and intricacy of the abstract world we live in.” The artist says she’s inspired by both nature and the Bauhaus architecture of Prague, where she was born. In “Paradise,” she experiments with silicone, an “exciting discovery” for her. “Finding a new medium to work with is always invigorating,” says Reich. “Time will tell where this new path will lead.” She adds that the other works in this exhibit will be created in the gallery before the show.
“The Magic Circus” features 14 mixed-media works by Robert Burridge. The works are acrylic/collage on canvas, wood panel and paper mounted on wood. “These paintings are from my childhood memories of the circus,” says Burridge. “The best part was when my dad came to my school to get me because the circus was in town that day! As he drove nearer to the open field with me in the back seat of his car, I saw hand-painted signs that read ‘Roadside Attractions Up Ahead!’ My earliest memory was of elation, excitement and anticipation.” A former industrial designer, Burridge is now a renowned artist, sought-after juror, author and teacher. His original paintings are represented around the world and are also on Starbucks Coffee mugs and Pearl Vodka bottles. In addition, Burridge has written “Loosen Up Studio Workbook” and “Art Marketing: The Business of Selling Your Art.” Burridge will be teaching two workshops at Art Center Sarasota, Feb. 13-17 and Feb. 18-19.
“ASALH: Black Muse 2017” is a curated exhibit of the member artists of the Association for the Study of African-American Life and History. The Art Center hosts this annual exhibition to highlight some of the region’s African-American artists. This exhibition covers a wide array of media, from painting and drawing to sculpture. Exhibiting artists include Jean McMurren, Eleanor Darlington, Myma Morris, Carolyn Rice, Joseph Pierre, Jane Thames, Jacquelyn Dixon, Todd Berrien, Barbara Mask, Major Gladden and Arline Flournoy.
“Classic Fantastic” is an all-media, all-subject juried exhibition open to all artists. The juror for this exhibition is Shawn Pettersen, an artist, sculptor and fine arts technician at Ringling College of Art and Design.
The 15th Annual Fabulous Arts Boutique (FAB) showcasing works by local artisans is March 1-4. Opening reception, with early buying, is March 1, 6-8 p.m. ($10 donation) Show hours are Thursday-Saturday, March 2-4, 10 a.m.-4p.m. This event is free.
2016-2017 Season: A Quick Glance
Cycle 4 (March 16-April 21) features the “SPECTRUM II” installation; “Beginning to End,” a solo exhibit of work by Peppi Elona; an invitational sculpture exhibit; and “From Within,” an open, juried exhibit.
Cycle 5 (May 18-June 30) features “Unlimited Potential,” a juried, members-only show (May 18-June 23); an exhibit of works by Amy Ernst and Amy Ragus; “MASHterpieces IV”; and a fourth exhibit TBA (May 25-June 30).
Cycle 6 (July 6-August 11) features “Florida’s Finest,” an all-media, all-subject, juried exhibition highlighting the talented artists of the Sunshine State, in all galleries.
Cycle 7 (August 24-September 29) features a solo exhibit entitled “World Without Men” by Lowell Gilbertson; a solo exhibit by Carol Prusa; an exhibit TBD in gallery 3; and “Line, Form and Color,” an open, peer-juried exhibit.

About Art Center Sarasota
Art Center Sarasota was the first arts and cultural institution in Sarasota. It was founded in 1926 as the “Sarasota Art Association” by Marcia Rader, the art supervisor for the Sarasota County schools district. In the early years, the group met monthly and sponsored exhibits in rented facilities. The Association was incorporated as a not-for-profit organization in 1943 and has been in its current location in the Sarasota Bayfront Cultural District since 1949.
