Venice Theatre Cabaret offers alternative to typical holiday entertainment
“Six Women With Brain Death” brings laughs to Cabaret Dec. 2 – 18, 2016
Venice, FL, Nov. 18, 2016 –
Venice Theatre continues its 2016-2017 Cabaret Season with the unconventional musical Six Women With Brain Death, or Expiring Minds Want To KnowThe show that BBC News calls “fantastic … funny and thought-provoking” opens Friday Dec. 2 and runs through Sunday Dec. 18. Performances are in the black box Pinkerton Theatre Tuesdays through Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets are $30 for adults, $17 for college students, and youth tickets are $15. The show is not recommended for children or pre-teens. Seats are general admission and are on sale now at the theatre’s box office, online at www.venicestage.com or by phone at 941-488-1115. Friends looking for a girls night out should note that discounts are available for parties of 20 or more.
It’s been almost a generation since the show last graced local stages at the old Theatre Works in Sarasota. So it’s time for a new generation (and those who loved it the last time) to see what Six Women With Brain Death is all about. “What it’s about” is hard to explain, even for New York reviewers, like Matthew Murray from Talkin’ Broadway who spent his entire review trying to explain something he ultimately could not. But there is no doubt that this musical review wrapped in sketch comedy is funny. It’s why Venice Theatre’s Executive Director Murray Chase chose it. And if you ask director Kelly Wynn Woodland about its label as a feminist piece, she says, “It shouldn’t be taken so seriously. It’s just funny. Very funny.”
When the musical took the Edinburgh Fringe Festival by storm, The Scottsman Review said songs like “Prom Queen,” “I Read Too Much,” and “God Is An Alien” kept “the laughs coming from beginning to end!” and gave it 4 out of 5 stars.
The British Theatre Guide raved, “It is hilariously funny. It examines a whole range of American girls’ and women’s concerns, from Barbie, through proms and high school reunions, to daytime soaps, in a nonstop roller coaster of short, very sharp sketches and musical numbers.”
Woodland, who has built a reputation in the local theatre scene for directing edgy comedies, is the perfect choice to lead this cast of funny women. Area theatre goers will recognize Liz Pascoe, Nancy Denton, Alison Prouty, Morgan Graves

and Ariella Pizarro from a myriad of other shows including The Toxic Avenger, Hair, Godspell, and The 39 Steps. Brian Finnerty, currently performing in the smash hit Billy Elliot, is choreographer and Eli Schildkraut (Rocky Horror, Random Acts) provides music direction.
Again, tickets for Six Women With Brain Death, Or Expiring Minds Want to Know and all Venice Theatre shows and events through June 2017 are available at the box office at 941-488-1115 or online at VeniceStage.com. Venice Theatre is located at 140 W. Tampa Ave. on the island in Venice. The box office is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays, and one hour before performances.
