The official music video for Emeli Sandé‘s “Garden” featuring Jay Electronic and newcomer Áine Zionpremiered today on Vevo. The clip, which was directed by Charlie Robins, can be seen HERE. The sexy, brooding club track is from Sandé’s new album, Long Live The Angels (Capitol Records), which is now available HERE.
“‘Garden’ is one of my favorite songs from the album,” says Emeli Sandé. “It is an expression of freedom and passion, two important parts of life, which I hadn’t really explored until a few years ago. It was a great honor to work with the genius Jay Electronica and I’m very excited to introduce a very special talent, Aine Zion.”
Vibe observed, “A mix of spiritual and sensual energy pours out of Emeli Sandé as she takes control on ‘Garden’ with Jay Electronica and newcomer, Áine Zion” while Rolling Stone praised the track as “poetic.”
The song opens with a languid, almost ethereal introduction from featured artist Áine Zion. “I’m not telling you to love what I love; I’m asking you to take time to know who it is that you love and are in love with,” she says, evoking the stillness of post-night out, pre-dawn moments. In kicks the beat and Sandé weaves her way into the track, with her distinctive voice. “In the club, how you dance, how you touch, how you offer up your love and devotion,” she sings, recalling the intoxicated feeling and infatuation that comes from attraction on the dancefloor. In a rare performance, rapper Jay Electronica makes his mark with his dexterous and near mythical flow, “Love is like a garden; love is like a death sentence; love is like a pardon – I’m free again, I’m ready.”
While reminiscent of Sandé’s urban roots, “Garden” also takes her into unchartered territory. Not only does “Garden” present a more insightful, perception-shifting look into Emeli Sandé, it continues to represent the sense of unreserved freedom and artistry that lies in the new single “Hurts” and at the foundation of Long Live the Angels.
“Longing, pain, loneliness and a need to believe pour out of ‘Long Live the Angels’…It’s a clear, accomplished cry from the heart, exorcising its sorrows by declaring them bluntly,” said The New York Times’ Jon Pareles in this review. Entertainment Weekly put the album on “The Must List” and noted, “Whether you’re in it for the spiritual journey or the breakup anthems, Sandé’s crystal-clear vocals will take you there and beyond.” The FADER hailed “Hurts” as “her best music to date,” Newsweek called it “haunting” and Wonderland praised it as “rich with the heart and soul that first made us fall in love with Sandé.”The video for “Hurts,” which can be viewed HERE, already has nearly six million views.
