Friendly Food Fight between Local Chefs to Kick Off

Eat Local Week at the Bradenton Farmers’ Market

Chefs compete in a friendly cook-off competition to create the tastiest dish using ingredients from the Bradenton Farmers’ Market.

BRADENTON, Fla. — The Bradenton Farmers’ Market is hosting the second annual Friendly Food Fight, a cook-off between Bradenton-area chefs using ingredients sourced from the Bradenton Farmers’ Market on Saturday, October 22. The Friendly Food Fight marks the beginning of Eat Local Week, a nine-day celebration of the best in local food and farming in Sarasota and Manatee counties, from October 22–30.

“We have some of the best chefs in the area creating dishes using fresh, local produce and other flavorful ingredients found at the Bradenton Farmers’ Market. It’s important for everyone to know how easy it is to prepare foods using healthy and delicious components,” says Peg Haynes, market manager of the Bradenton Farmers’ Market.

Friendly Food Fight chefs include Dana Johnson of Sugar Cubed Pastry Lab; Dave Shiplett of Birdrock Taco Shack; Rovshan Avila of La Mesa (opening soon); Erik Walker of Mar Vista Dockside; and Gaetano Cannata of Ortygia.

The Friendly Food Fight competition will take place at the intersection of Fourth Avenue West and Old Main Street, from 10:15–11 a.m., followed by judging at 11 a.m. People’s Choice sampling is from 11–11:30 a.m., while samples last. A team of food-loving Millennials will light-heartedly judge the dishes prepared by the chefs and describe what makes every dish a winner. Market patrons may participate and vote for the People’s Choice Award.

The 2016–2017 sponsors of the Bradenton Farmers’ Market are the Bradenton Herald, Downtown Development Authority, Florida Blue, Manatee Community Federal Credit Union, Bright House Networks, and Mosaic. Fun4SRQkids.com is a community partner.
