RANGERS ADD RHP NICK TEPESCH AND SCOTT BAKER TO ACTIVE ROSTER

LHP Martin Perez placed on disabled list and RHP Justin Germano designated for assignment

Houston, Texas — The Texas Rangers announced this afternoon the following four roster moves:

  • Right-handed pitcher Nick Tepesch (#23) recalled from Round Rock (AAA).
  • Right-handed pitcher Scott Baker (#25) contract purchased from Round Rock (AAA).
  • Left-handed pitcher Martin Perez placed on 15-day disabled list with left elbow inflammation.
  • Right-handed pitcher Justin Germano designated for assignment.

Tepesch, 25, is slated to make his season debut for the Rangers in tonight’s series finale in Houston. He was optioned to Round Rock during spring training on March 17 and has spent the season there, going 6-1 with a 1.58 ERA (8 ER/45.2 IP) in 7 games/starts. The right-hander was scratched from his scheduled Triple-A start on Sunday at Memphis, when it was announced that he would start tonight and last pitched on May 6 vs. Omaha. Tepesch went 4-6, 4.84 (50 ER/93.0 IP) in 19 games/17 starts for Rangers in 2013, his ML debut. Tepesch would become the 9th Ranger to start a game this season, which will tie Chicago-AL for most in the majors.

Baker, 32, was designated for assignment on May 8 and was outrighted to Round Rock on May 11. He did not appear in a game during his second stint with the Express. Baker had his contract purchased from Round Rock on May 7 and finished a 9-2 loss to Colorado in relief (5.1 IP, 2 R-ER) in his Rangers debut that night. He was designated for assignment the following day. Baker was signed by Texas to a minor league contract on March 28 and began the season at Round Rock, going 4-1 with a 3.32 ERA (14 ER/38.0 IP) in 6 games/starts.

Perez went 4-3 with a 4.38 ERA (25 ER/51.1 IP) and 2 shutouts over 8 starts with the Rangers. The left-hander last started May 10 vs. Boston.

The Rangers have 10 days to trade, release, or outright Germano to the minor leagues.  The right-hander had no record and a 11.81 ERA (7 ER/5.1 IP) in 2 relief appearances with the Rangers. He tossed 3.1 innings of relief last night at Houston.

After today’s moves, the Rangers still have a full 40-man roster.
