Last year, JANELLE KROLL released “Sunny Days, a song that garnered the indie singer/songwriter high praise from influential music sites, inclusion on Spotify’s most coveted playlists and a performance slot at Lollapalooza. Now “Sunny Days, which currently has over 1 million spins on Spotify, is being reintroduced via a masterful remix by BKAYE, a 20-year-old producer/DJ hailing from San Francisco. The remix premiered on Trap Nation, where it has received over 760,000 plays, and is now available at all digital retailers via NYC-based record label Lokal Legend.

“Originally written at a faster tempo, it’s exciting to hear the song with a brighter approach that pulls against the downpour of angst in the lyric,” JANELLE says of BKAYE‘s interpretation. “This remix was a fortunate collision made possible thanks to the internet. The song had been circulating online for a year when BKAYE reached out with enthusiasm for the record, and here we are now, breathing new life into this song that means a great deal to me on a personal level.”
Even before an official release of her own, JANELLE built an impressive resume, lending her inimitable vocal talents to several dance tracks such as Dennis Ferrer’s “Mind Ur Step, Autograf’s “Metaphysical, and Moon Boots’ “Utopia” and in 2014, JANELLE went on tour with Big Data as lead vocalist. With the February 2015 release of “Sunny Days,” JANELLE formally introduced her soulful pop, bright harmonies and nocturnal R&B sound to the world. “Sunny Days” first debuted on Bullett Media and was widely praised on several highly regarded sites (noted below). Additionally, Spotify chose the track for its coveted New Music Playlist and it went Top 10 on both the hub’s U.S. Viral Chart and Global Viral Chart. Amidst the flurry of the release, JANELLE was invited to play Lollapalooza 2015. The track serves as a fitting gateway into her sultry and sensual delivery and towering dynamics.
“The song feels universal, but it’s also highly personal at the same time,” she shares. “You want to stop thinking about that person who’s under your skin. The best case scenario would be that it works out and you get through to them, but you know you just need to move on. In my music I’m most interested in exposing dualities, tension points, from which I can dive in. And from there all I can do is be as honest as possible.”
Following the success of “Sunny Days,” JANELLE released Numb, an original track that premiered on Pigeons and Planes and was also featured on Saint Heron, which made note of “her flawless songwriting skills throughout the dreamy, pop-esque soundscapes.” That was followed up by the release of Down To You (My Confidante), her airy take on the Joni Mitchell classic. Pigeons and Planes shared the song first and wrote, “Janelle Kroll has the right approach in mind on her cover…updating the original with a warm, electronic sound bed to match her sultry, twisting vocal.” Both releases were again added to Spotify’s New Music Playlist.
JANELLE‘s collection of recent releases has further proven her irrefutable gift to capture a spectrum of emotions: powerful and delicate, confident and vulnerable, beautiful and sexy, raw and sultry, earthly and ethereal. Everything springs from a singular style that veers left from indie music’s typical posturing. She coyly dubs her sound “dependent music” adding “I sing about emotional dependencies.” The Chicago-native now based in NYC is gearing up to release more new music this summer. Look for more details to be released in the coming weeks.
Here’s a sample of the high praise “Sunny Days” has received thus far:
“The song is a wending, slinky romance, with Kroll’s voice hovering above a reserved production that threatens to build into a high energy club explosion, before pulling back just so.”
Bullet Media, 2/5/15
“Brooklyn songstress Janelle Kroll is a romantic force…Her music is honest & powerful…’Sunny Days’ is a well crafted song, beautifully balanced with restrained energy & bursts of emotion in all the right places. It’s a slow jam heavy hitter. Gone are the days of the fragile breakup anthem…that’s the future of breakup songs and ‘Sunny Days’ is leading the way.”
“NYC based artist Janelle Kroll has the elements that create a successful female artist and effervescent charm that oozes out of every note that she sings, think shades of Minnie Riperton if she dealt in soft rock and electro cool…Backed up by a steady beat and slow, funky guitar licks ‘Sunny Days’ is proof positive that the best music contains both sun and clouds.”
Earmilk, 2/17/15
“…essentially an R&B jam that keeps her vocals in the spotlight as she moves from softer tones to belting it out.”
Kick Kick Snare, 2/17/15
“A simple melody, mixed with an orchestra of synth drum beats puts this in a completely new category of RnB and EDM. The song starts off slow with simple keys, but crescendos into a catchy rhythm and the brave use of a bluesy guitar ‘whammy bar’ is very different but works perfects in this track…This lady has a beautifully soulful and rounded voice, even when she’s hitting those soprano notes.”
