(Los Angeles) May 4, 2016 — The Los Angeles Master Chorale (LAMC) concludes its 2015-16 season with “Sonic Masterworks,” an aural tapestry of a cappella works from around the globe spanning six centuries, with conducting duties shared by Artistic Director Grant Gershon, Associate Conductor Lesley Leighton and newly appointed Artist-in-Residence Eric Whitacre, in his LAMC conducting debut, on Sunday, June 5, 2016, 7 pm, at Walt Disney Concert Hall. Gershon conducts the Chorale’s first-ever performance of Allegri’s revered Miserere, composed around 1630 during the reign of Pope Urban VIII; Italian Baroque composer Lotti’s Crucifixus; Ligeti’s Lux Aeterna, made famous by Stanley Kubrick’s film 2001: A Space Odyssey; and Abbie Betinis’ Envoi, simulating the sounds of a mass migration of butterflies. He also leads Haitian-American composer Sydney Guillaume’s Au-delà du chagrin; Argentine composer Javier Zentner’s Mi lumia; and the spiritual Elijah Rock by Hogan. In tribute to Steven Stucky, who passed away in February, Leighton conducts the Pulitzer Prize-winning composer’s Three New Motets. Whitacre leads his own arrangement of the iconic electronic band Depeche Mode’s anthem Enjoy the Silence and acclaimed Swedish composer Anders Hillborg’s Mouayiyoum, evoking the surreal beauty of the Aurora Borealis in the Scandinavian winter sky.
“This concert is pure ear candy,” states Gershon. “These are sonically overwhelming pieces that have long been on my radar and will bring out the complex and kaleidoscopic sonorities of the LA Master Chorale’s versatile voices.”
Tickets range from $29 – $129. Group rates are available. For tickets and information, please call (213) 972-7282, or visit www.lamc.org.
