A throwback to an era of hippies, peace and love, Topanga Days is a 3-day music festival fundraiser with great music, food, crafts, and a heap of raucous family fun mixed in to this country fair. 2016 will feature three-time Grammy Award-winning Mexican-American band Los Lobos on the main stage on Sunday, May 29, at 5:30 p.m. A sampling of other artists in the line-up includes: Deb Ryder, Venice, Jungle Fire, Electra, Incendio, Masanga Marimba Band, Jewels and Johnny Nation, Avery Rose Band, Calico the Band, Blame Sally, The Hipwaders, Fishtank Ensemble and Kummerspeck Das Bowie.
Topanga Days is one of the original community meet-ups. It is a living tribute to the era of love and flower power, a theme that resonates across generations. Topanga Days was founded in 1973 by actors, writers, artists, musicians, and nature lovers who called Topanga Canyon home and hoped to raise a few dollars for their Topanga Community House, a 501c3. Today, residents are still a mix of artists, professionals and free spirits, but the event has grown into an annual blowout that attracts crowds from all over Los Angeles County and beyond. People travel to the quaint enclave in the Santa Monica Mountains to enjoy art and craft booths, belly dancing, and more than a 25 musical acts performing over three days. There are plenty of activities for kids—from creative face painting to a Kids’ Zone with various games, a playground, giant slide, and bounce house.
Zany games are a staple of the festival as well, with contests featuring names like Baby Derby and Bubble Gum Blowing Contest, Egg Russian Roulette, Cherry Seed Spitting, and the Infamous Pie Eating Contest, a perennial crowd pleaser. A highlight of the weekend is an offbeat and often irreverent Memorial Day Parade on Monday morning, May 30th and promises a steady stream of floats, cars, horses, dogs, kids, fire trucks and more. This year’s Grand Marshal is Tony Dow, “Wally” of Leave It To Beaver, and a Topangan for 30 years. It is a dancing, prancing, singing affair that embodies Topanga’s colorful character and charm but is always a sincere tribute of remembrance and respect for the veterans of our armed forces.
Food fare ranges from vegan to Mexican, BBQ, funnel cakes, ice cream and much more this year. There’s beer, wine and a popular sangria bar too. Street parking is available with free shuttle service. Only service dogs with appropriate papers are allowed.
The Topanga Community Club is a not for profit organization dedicated to the improvement and preservation of the Topanga Community House and surrounding grounds. The center offers low-cost programs for children and seniors and hosts numerous community and charitable events. Topanga Days is its main fundraiser of the year, and still boasts very inexpensive tickets for an entire day of concerts.
Los Lobos also formed in 1973, began as a garage band and has since traveled the globe offering audiences a powerhouse mix of rock, Tex-Mex, country, folk, R&B, blues, and traditional Spanish and Mexican music. The group’s primary wordsmith, Louie Perez, has said the band plays “the soundtrack of the barrio.”
