5313 Bay Shore Rd., SarasotaMarginalia features the culmination of a yearlong intensive project undertaken by five New College studio art majors: Davin Aberle, Laura Costa, Meris Drew, Danielle Dygert, and Sara Sarmiento. This years featured work shares a common interest in illuminating the overlooked, while foregrounding timely topics including: the representation of LGBTQ people in popular media, the tensions and complexities of sisterhood through the lens of Homer, biculturality via the graphic novel, wonderment and melancholy in the miniature, and post-colonial identity.Exhibit is on display April 11-May 20, Mon.-Fri., 12-5 p.m.

Asolo Rep proudly presents its annual documentary theatre project, Faces of Change, which collects stories, personal experiences, and interviews from community members of diverse backgrounds, assembles an original script, and presents free readings followed by post-show discussions. This season’s Faces of Change takes its theme from the theatre’s upcoming production of Ayad Akhtar’s Pulitzer Prize-winning drama Disgraced. Readings are followed by a community conversation and reception.

Sarasota Contemporary Dance presents National Water Dance – A community dance event!

Sarasota Contemporary Dance, along with other communities across the U.S., will be joining the National Water Dance Event with a celebration of dance alongside various bodies of water. The live performance of National Water Dance Project 2016 (click here to learn more) is a national collaboration of dance artists working to bring pressing water issues affecting the U.S. to the forefront. Project includes students from Rowlett Arts Academy, Electa Lee Middle School, Manatee School for the Arts, New College of Florida, and adults from the SCD Red Tent Class.

The North Port Chorale presents its final concert of the season, April in Paris…and Maybe New York.

CALLING ALL ARTISTS!
EXHIBIT OPPORTUNITY AT THE
ARTS AND CULTURAL ALLIANCE
The Arts and Cultural Alliance offers a no-fee, one-month (or longer) juried art exhibit opportunity in the Center for Arts and Humanity located at 1226 N. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota.
Many arts organizations use the building for their offices and meetings, so there is constant foot traffic of art-savvy patrons who like to view exhibits.
Participation is limited to qualified artists who are members of the Alliance and have not exhibited at the Center for the past two years. While there is no charge to exhibit, the Alliance does request a donation of 10% of sales made during the exhibition.
The Alliance promotes the exhibit to its membership and co-hosts a reception with the artist to introduce the exhibition to the public and friends.

Patriot Plaza Guide! |

The Arts and Cultural Alliance will provide two six-hour training sessions for individuals in our community who would like to become guides for Patriot Plaza at the Sarasota National Cemetery. The tours given by the guides provide details about the beautiful amphitheater and five large public artworks. The art includes brass sculptures, a mosaic mural, etched glass, marble tablets and plinths, and documentary photographs.
The themes of Patriot Plaza are: Honor Service, Inspire Patriotism, and Embrace Freedom. The training sessions will take place in the spring. In addition to the training sessions, guides are also expected to spend additional time on their own learning about the artworks, shadowing current tours, and perfecting tour presentations for adults and students.
