Handel’s Messiah

The greatest story ever told. The most majestic music ever conceived. And it is music’s most powerful message of faith. This is the Messiah of the season, performed by the ISO along with the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir.

Sunday, January 22, 2017, 3 p.m.
Krzysztof Urbański, Conductor
Paul Groves, Tenor
Sasha Cook, Mezzo-Soprano

Performed as part of Maestro Urbański’s two-weekend Music of the Earth Festival, Mahler’s serene Das Lied von der Erde (“The Song of the Earth,”) is drawn from delicate lines of Chinese poetry and is the first of his great farewells.

Beethoven’s “Eroica”
Sunday, February 19, 2017, 3 p.m.
Edo de Waart, Conductor
Tim McAllister, Saxophone

Hear Edo de Waart and the ISO perform one of Beethoven’s towering achievements, the mighty Symphony No. 3, the “Eroica.”  Also featured is American composer John Adams’ evocative and jazz-inspired Saxophone Concerto.

Debussy’s La Mer
Sunday, March 12, 2017, 3 p.m.
Jun Märkl, Conductor
Jennifer Johnston, Mezzo Soprano

“Music,” wrote Claude Debussy, “must be as boundless as the wind. The sky. The sea.” La Mer is Debussy’s sensuous impression of the deep sea. Jennifer Johnston, named “a rising star” by BBC Music Magazine, joins distinguished conductor Jun Märkl for Sir Edward Elgar’s exquisite Sea Pictures.

Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances
Saturday, May 6, 2017, 8 p.m.
Matthias Pintscher, Conductor
Kelley O’Connor, Mezzo Soprano

The music of Rachmaninoff has touched the heart for generations. Matthias Pintscher conducts the Russian master’s late, luxuriant Symphonic Dances, music that poignantly quotes nostalgic melodies from his early Vespers.

Krzysztof Urbański, Conductor
Lauren Snouffer, Soprano
Vale Rideout, Tenor
Jochen Kupfer, Baritone

It is both sacred and profane. It speaks of romantic love and carnal desire. The ISO, Indianapolis Symphonic Choir and the Indianapolis Children’s Choir, under the direction of Krzysztof Urbański, perform Carl Orff’s ecstatic Carmina Burana. If you have never experienced it live in concert, prepare for a stunning experience.
