Boston University Tanglewood Institute—One of this Country’s Premiere Training Programs for Aspiring High School-Age Musicians—Announces 50th Anniversary Programming, to Take Place at its Summer Home, Tanglewood, June 20-August 13

BUTI celebrates 50thanniversary with expanded programming,
Visiting Artists Nico Muhly and pianist Simone Dinnerstein,
and concerts at Tanglewood’s Seiji Ozawa Hall and Koussevitzky Music Shed

Special 50th Anniversary Celebration on August 6, 2016

Over the course of the eight-week season, June 20 through August 13, BUTI students and faculty will perform more than 70 concerts in the Berkshire community, including faculty recitals, solo recitals, chamber music, opera scenes, vocal recitals, a full-length opera, and large ensemble concerts.

A highlight of the summer is the 50th Anniversary Celebration Concert on August 6 at Seiji Ozawa Hall at 2:30 pm. The dazzling concert will celebrate the legacy and future of BUTI and will showcase students and faculty from BUTI’s Young Artists Programs, alumni guest artists from across the country, new compositions commissioned specially for this concert from alumni Nico Muhly and Timo Andres, and more.

BUTI has launched a new Young Artists Opera Intensive this summer in addition to the established Young Artists Vocal Program. The new opera program was conceived with undergraduate college students in mind and will culminate with a full-length black box version of Strauss’ Die Fledermaus on July 1 and 2 (double cast) at the West Street Theatre on BUTI’s Lenox campus. These performances give the students the unique opportunity to perform a full-length role while they are still undergraduates, enhancing their vocal and physical stamina and providing invaluable performance experience. The opera will be led by music director William Lumpkin and stage director Sarah Meyers. BUTI’s longtime Young Artists Vocal Program for high school students will continue to offer student vocal recitals and performances throughout the summer.

As part of the 50th Anniversary, BUTI is launching a new Visiting Artist Residency Program designed to integrate alumni artists deeply and broadly into the BUTI community as teachers, mentors, and role models. The inaugural Visiting Artists are composer Nico Muhly (BUTI ’96, ’97), who will be in residence July 25–August 6, and pianist Simone Dinnerstein (BUTI ’86, ’87), in residence August 7–13. Muhly and Dinnerstein will teach classes, coach ensembles, talk about their careers, work with composers, share meals with the students, and more. Muhly’s compositions will be played throughout the Young Artists Program. Dinnerstein will perform with the Young Artists Orchestra in Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue on the August 13 Ozawa Hall season finale.

BUTI’s Young Artists Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, and Chorus will perform a series in Seiji Ozawa Hall and the Koussevitzky Music Shed on the Tanglewood grounds from July 16–August 13. A notable roster of guest conductors will work with these three ensembles including Paul Haas (BUTI ’87, ’88), Lawrence Loh, David J. Martins, Ken-David Masur (BUTI ’96), H. Robert Reynolds, and Katie Woolf (BU ’05).

The Institute’s affiliation with the Boston Symphony Orchestra continues to be a highlight of the program. BUTI’s Young Artists Orchestra and Choruswill be featured at as part of Tanglewood on Parade on August 2 at 4pm at the Koussevitzky Music Shed.

ABOUT BOSTON UNIVERSITY TANGLEWOOD INSTITUTE

Celebrating its 50th Anniversary Season, Boston University Tanglewood Institute (BUTI) is a program of Boston University College of Fine Arts. BUTI accepts a select group of talented high school and early college-age musicians each summer, inviting them to BU’s 64-acre campus in Lenox, MA, for training programs in orchestra, voice, opera, wind ensemble, piano, composition, and harp, as well as workshops for individual instruments and string chamber music. Led by Executive Director Hilary Field Respass, BUTI is recognized internationally as one of the premiere summer training programs for aspiring high school-age musicians. It is the only program of its kind associated with one of the world’s great symphony orchestras, the Boston Symphony Orchestra. This year’s student body was selected through a rigorous application and audition process. Auditions are open to high school-aged musicians and, for the opera intensive only, undergraduate-aged singers. Participants are drawn from a field of applicants from the United States and abroad. Founded in 1966, BUTI is a result of the vision of Erich Leinsdorf, music director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO) at the time, who invited Boston University College of Fine Arts to create a summer program for high school musicians as a counterpart to the BSO’s Tanglewood Music Center (TMC), then called the Berkshire Music Center. Since its founding BUTI has grown into a preeminent international program for those interested in exploring rigorous, advanced level music instruction. Scores of its alumni have gone on to illustrious careers in music, including dozens who perform in the top orchestras in the country. For more information, visit bu.edu/tanglewood.
