Directors, actors at Starlite Players prepare four comedies for “Let Me Call You Sweetheart”;
Plays are set to run on April 21-22-23-24 in the Starlite Room
SARASOTA, FL: The directors, actors and tech crew are busily rehearsing four short comedies about romance, to be presented under the collective title of “Let Me Call You Sweetheart” on Thursday through Saturday, April 21-22-23, at 7:30 p.m. and on Sunday, April 24, at 6:30 p.m. The plays are staged in the casual, intimate theater upstairs at The Starlite Room, 1001 Cocoanut Avenue. The four plays are:
“The Hetero Chorus Boy” by Jack Gilhooley, directed by Kathleen Junkins. Sean is a straight—but closeted—Broadway chorus boy. Because his best friend Deana wants more than a platonic relationship, he reveals his straightness, never expecting a controversy with world-wide repercussions.
“The Naked Truth” by Tom Sivak, directed by Jenny Aldrich Walker. The first rule of improvisational theater is “Never say no.” One never knows where this may lead, but our MC knows what he’s looking for: The Naked Truth.
“Co-Dependents” by Jack Gilhooley and Jo Morello, directed by Mark Woodland. Starlite audiences may have met Charlie and Marie Williams, husband-and-wife playwrights, in the January play “Connubial Bliss.” Now they’re back. Struggling with a failing career and separated in their faltering marriage, each gets a bitter taste of life as a single—with hilarious results.
“Guaranteed” by James McLindon, directed by Mark Woodland. An inexperienced robber tries to hold up a bank, not expecting a teller who can’t wait to share what she’s learning in law school. Instead of cash, he gets a lesson in law and love.
Starlite Players stages an evening of short, unpublished comedies for one weekend each month and has produced 29 plays since its debut in July 2015. Its focus is on theater professionals from the Tampa Bay area. Tickets at $17.50 include the four plays and a 15% discount on an optional pre- or post-show dinner at The Starlite Room.
