Starlite Players chooses four comedies for “Let Me Call You Sweetheart”; Plays are set to run on April 21-22-23-24 in the Starlite Room
SARASOTA, FL: Starlite Players has chosen four short comedies about romance, to be presented under the collective title of “Let Me Call You Sweetheart” on Thursday through Saturday, April 21-22-23, at 7:30 p.m. and on Sunday, April 24, at 6:30 p.m. The plays are staged in the casual, intimate theater upstairs at The Starlite Room, 1001 Cocoanut Avenue. “Members of our dedicated reading committee have been reviewing well over 100 submission that were submitted anonymously,” said Jo Morello, founder and producing artistic director. “We’re currently finalizing selections for the shows we’ll present on May 19-22, June 16-19 and July 14-17,” she said.
The plays selected for “Let Me Call You Sweetheart,” to be presented on April 21-24, are:
“The Naked Truth” by Tom Sivak. The emcee of a game show offers his guest a unique opportunity to get what she wants but is not prepared for her reply: “I’ve always wanted to take off all my clothes…on a stage.” Nor is he ready for the unexpected way her desire plays out.
“Co-Dependents” by husband-and-wife playwrights Jack Gilhooley and Jo Morello. Starlite audiences may have met Charlie and Marie Williams, husband-and-wife playwrights, in the January play “Connubial Bliss.” Now they’re back. Struggling with a failing career and separated in their faltering marriage, each gets a bitter taste of life as a single—with hilarious results.
“Guaranteed” by James McLindon. An inexperienced robber tries to hold up a bank, not expecting a teller who can’t wait to share what she’s learning in law school. Instead of cash, he gets a lesson in law and love.
“The Hetero Chorus Boy” by Jack Gilhooley. Sean is a straight—but closeted–Broadway chorus boy. Because his best friend Deana wants more than a platonic relationship, he reveals his straightness, never expecting a controversy with world-wide repercussions.
Starlite Players stages an evening of short, unpublished comedies for one weekend each month and has produced 29 plays since its debut in July 2015. Its focus is on theater professionals from the Tampa Bay area: playwrights, directors, actors, technical crew and other personnel.
