The Boston Conservatory Presents
WINTERWORKS Dance Performance
Features New Works Created by Dance Division Students and Composers from The Boston Conservatory and
Berklee College of Music
(BOSTON—February 12, 2014) The Boston Conservatory is unveilinga very special, collaborative new dance performance full of premieres this month. The show, entitled WINTERWORKS, will be performed at The Boston Conservatory Theater February 20-22, 2014.
Many of the student pieces premiering at WINTERWORKSare collaborations between choreographers and composers from both The Boston Conservatory and Berklee College of Music. For these pieces, composers from both schools worked closely with choreographers to compose music that captures the imagination of the dance; likewise, choreographers have shaped their movements to blend seamlessly with the new music compositions.
“This particular performance really highlights The Boston Conservatory’s commitment to empowering students to both create and collaborate,” says Cathy Young, director of the Dance Division. “So much of the training at the Conservatory is preparing our students to actively shape the future of dance—whether as choreographers, dancers, artistic directors or teachers—and the process of creating the performances in this show allows them that freedom to find their own artistry.”
The program also features the Conservatory freshman class’ premiere performances on the mainstage with two works. The first is a new work by local choreographer and Conservatory faculty member Lorraine Chapman. Chapman has been named one of Dance Magazine’s “25 to Watch” and has danced with Eliot Feld Ballet and Ballet British Columbia, among others. For WINTERWORKS, she has staged an entertaining and charming deconstruction of vaudeville.
The second piece that the freshman class will perform is In Finite Space, which was choreographedby 2013 alumna Margot Gelber. This performance marks the inaugural presentation of The Boston Conservatory’s Alumni Commissioning Project, a new initiative in which the Dance Division will commission a work created by an alumni member every year to further highlight its commitment to Conservatory graduates and support their development as choreographers and artists.
WINTERWORKSwill be performed Thursday, February 20, Friday, February 21 and Saturday, February 22 at 8 p.m. at The Boston Conservatory Theater. Tickets are $15 for general admission; $10 for senior citizens, Boston Conservatory Alumni and WGBH members; and free for non-Conservatory students.
