Uber Statement on the Passage of Senate Bill 1118 in Today’s  Senate Judiciary Committee Meeting

(Tallahassee, Fla.) – Today, members of the Florida Senate Judiciary Committee voted on Senate Bill 1118, which would establish statewide insurance standards for transportation network companies and individuals driving on their behalf.

A proposed amendment by Senator Brandes would have brought the bill in line with the growing consensus among the ridesharing and insurance industries on the appropriate levels of required insurance for transportation network company operations, the insurance standards passes by the Florida House of Representatives, and the standards set in law in 28 states across the country.

The below statement is to be attributed to Bill Gibbons, Uber spokesperson:

“It’s a disservice to the people of Florida that sensible public policy supported by the insurance and ridesharing industries and an overwhelming bipartisan supermajority in the House was corrupted by entrenched special interests in the Senate Judiciary Committee today.

“The taxi industry and their benefactors in the Senate lobbied hard on a bill that doesn’t apply to them in order to stifle competition in Florida.”

The next stop for SB 1118 is the Senate Appropriations Committee.
