It’s been nearly a year since Jinkx Monsoon, “America’s next drag superstar,” stole America’s heart with her winning turn in RuPaul’s Drag Race (LOGOtv). Today the versatile entertainer has premiered her first music video, for the song “Coffee & Wine” from her upcoming full-length debut, The Inevitable Album (due May 6).
A sexy, tongue-in-cheek little song about chemical dependency, “Coffee & Wine” was written and arranged by Jinkx’s musical co-conspirator Major Scales (aka Richard Andriessen), who is the main composer for the original songs on the album, as well as the musical director. “Just like any other relationship, you might miss them, get sick of them, or resent needing them by your side,” says M. Scales of the addictive liquids being honored in the song. “Just make sure to use in moderation unless, like in a relationship, you enjoy the headache.” The video was directed by Alex Berry, another of Jinkx’s frequent collaborators (and the creator of the upcoming film Drag Becomes Him), and shot on location in Cornish Playhouse at Seattle Center.
Inspired by Bette Midler’s The Divine Miss M, The Inevitable Album features a guest appearance by Fred Schneider (B-52’s), who wrote one of the original songs for the album, and who Jinkx and M. Scales both refer to as “a personal hero.” “The album also has many send ups to my favorite influences,” notes Jinkx, name-checking Billie Holiday, Patsy Cline, Amanda Palmer, Marlene Dietrich, Cole Porter, burlesque and cabaret performance, and of course vodka on the rocks. “We concocted an album that is a cohesive mixture of classic and contemporary.”
“Coffee & Wine” is currently available on iTunes.
