Sarasota County hires new Historical Resources Manager

SARASOTA COUNTY – Sarasota County Libraries and Historical Resources has hired Robert F. Bendus as the new historical resources manager.
Bendus has a long career in public service, having worked in several roles on both the local and state levels. He previously worked for the 12th Judicial Circuit of Florida and the Sarasota County Clerk or Court. Most recently, Bendus served as Director of the Division of Historical Resources in the Department of State, and as Florida State University’s Historic Preservation Officer.
“Robert has a broad professional experience that will be of great value as we continue to advance our historical programs,” said Sarasota County Administrator Tom Harmer. “We were fortunate to be able to recruit someone of his caliber, and we look forward to the expertise he brings to the community.”
Libraries and Historical Resources Director Sarabeth Kalajian said Bendus’ local ties are a great benefit, and will lead to collaboration and connection of organizational missions through common themes.
“We welcome the opportunity to work with a professional who already has such a connection to our community,” Kalajian added.
Bendus earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Catholic University. He also earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Florida State University, and it currently pursuing a doctorate in history at Florida State.
Bendus said that Sarasota County’s rich historical tapestry is what drew him to the position.
“Sarasota County is one of the most historically significant places in the country. I am excited about working with the community and the entire county team to promote this great history,” Bendus said.
Bendus is expected to start his new role in early March.
