The stunning opening title sequence to SPECTRE, featuring Sam Smith’s “Writing’s On The Wall,” premiered today on The Hollywood Reporter. This past week, “Writing’s On The Wall” has been nominated for a Golden Globe Award in the Best Original Song – Motion Picture category as well as a Critic’s Choice Award for Best Song. The lush ballad, written by Smith and Jimmy Napes, made history as it reached No. 1 on the UK Singles Chart instantly upon release, the first Bond theme ever to do so in the 52-year history of this franchise.
Smith said, “Jimmy and I are grateful to the Hollywood Foreign Press for their recognition of our work on this song. We are overjoyed to be nominated for a Golden Globe.”
Smith added, “We are also grateful to the Broadcast Film Critics for their nomination. We’re very proud of the song and thrilled to be a part of Spectre.”
The 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards will be broadcast live on January 10, 2016, from the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California at 5:00 p.m. PST / 8:00 p.m. EST on NBC.
The Telegraph UK called “Writing’s On The Wall” a “Monster Ballad” adding, “The song ticks by in a mood of building tension, emerging in shadows and ripples, and the big, dramatic reveal turns out not to be a pyrotechnic blast but the sheer emotional rush of Smith’s falsetto.”
SPECTRE has seen phenomenal success at the worldwide box office, opening #1 in over 80 markets, setting new opening and seven-day records in the UK, new opening records in Netherlands, Finland, Norway, and Denmark, a new record for the biggest Saturday of all time in Germany, a new record as the biggest opening weekend of all time for a 2D US film in China, and the biggest opening for the Bond franchise ever in India.
Earlier this year, Smith and Napes took home numerous GRAMMY Awards for Smith’s breakout hit, “Stay With Me,” including Record and Song of the Year in 2015, from Smith’s debut album In The Lonely Hour. In total, Smith walked away with four GRAMMY awards, which set the record for the most awards ever received by a U.K. artist following the release of a debut album. Smith was named Best New Artist, while In The Lonely Hour took Best Pop Vocal Album honors.
In its first year of release in the U.K., In The Lonely Hour logged an astonishing 50 weeks in the Top 5, a chart feat only previously achieved by The Beatles, according to OfficialCharts.com. The last, and only other, debut album in Official Charts history with this kind of unshakeable performance in its first year of release was The Beatles’ Please Please Me in 1963. Smith was the only artist to sell one million albums in both the U.S. and the U.K. in 2014.
ABOUT “SPECTRE”
A cryptic message from the past sends James Bond (Daniel Craig) on a rogue mission to Mexico City and eventually Rome, where he meets Lucia Sciarra (Monica Bellucci), the beautiful and forbidden widow of an infamous criminal.  Bond infiltrates a secret meeting and uncovers the existence of the sinister organisation known as SPECTRE.
Meanwhile back in London, Max Denbigh (Andrew Scott), the new head of the Centre for National Security, questions Bond’s actions and challenges the relevance of MI6, led by M (Ralph Fiennes). Bond covertly enlists Moneypenny (Naomie Harris) and Q (Ben Whishaw) to help him seek out Madeleine Swann (Léa Seydoux), the daughter of his old nemesis Mr. White (Jesper Christensen), who may hold the clue to untangling the web of SPECTRE. As the daughter of an assassin, she understands Bond in a way most others cannot.
