Pianist, conductor and arranger Tommy Goodman has been associated with a number of Broadway musicals and with such great names as Cole Porter, Josh Logan, Lena Horne, Sammy Davis, Jr., Louis Armstrong, and many others. Goodman’s compositions have been performed at Carnegie Hall and at the Juilliard and Eastman schools of music. For Munchtime Musicales, Goodman joins forces with two other area jazz talents, acclaimed bassist Dominic Mancini, and drummer Johnny Moore, lauded by critics for “his rock steady beat and tasty solos” that are “lessons in how drums should be played.”
“It’s a lot of fun putting together the smorgasbord of musical styles for Munchtime Musicales, and with this concert we’re definitely jazzing things up,” says Sarasota Concert Association board member and Munchtime Musicales coordinator Katherine Oarr. “David Cohen Hall is sure to be swinging with the rousing, straight-ahead jazz of this dexterous trio.”
Munchtime Musicales is a series of free concerts featuring performances by high-caliber, area-based artists. The series is designed to offer a wide variety of musical genres, including classical, folk, and jazz, featuring both vocal and instrumental performers. The 2015-2016 Munchtime Musicales concert season continues with The Bridge Trio, with Felicia Brunelle, violin, Isabelle Sanderling, cello, and Cheryl Tschanz, piano, in a program of works by noted female composers, including Gwyneth Walker, Jennifer Higdon, and Nadia Boulanger (January 20, 2016); a piano performance by the celebrated sister team of Cynthia Lawing and Gloria Cook, pianists who have performed to worldwide acclaim both individually and as a duo (February 17, 2016); Studio Artists from the Sarasota Opera, Sarasota’s ambassadors of opera who bring opera to stages beyond the walls of the Opera House (March 16, 2106); and Belle Canto, Sarasota’s women’s choral ensemble that celebrates women’s voices with a varied repertoire (April 13, 2016).
All Munchtime Musicales performances are at noon at the Beatrice Friedman Symphony Center, 709 N. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota. The series is free and open to the public. Sarasota Concert Association’s 2016 Great Performers Series at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall includes the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, lauded by The New York Times for its “conductorless ability to render complex scores with taut precision and feverish excitement,” (January 26, 2016); the return of the Cleveland Orchestra, long considered to be one of America’s greatest orchestras, under the baton of Franz Welser-Möst (January 31, 2016); the Miró Quartet, known for its exciting performances, technical finesse, eclectic programming, and for skillfully taking audiences across risky musical terrain with spectacular rewards (February 15, 2016); the groundbreaking Russian National Orchestra (RNO) under the baton of guest conductor Kirill Karabits, with violin soloist Stefan Jackiw (March 8, 2016); and the return of dynamic Russian pianist Olga Kern, renowned for her star power, vivid stage presence, passionately confident musicianship and extraordinary technique (March 14, 2016).
Great Performers Series concerts are at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, 777 North Tamiami Trail in Sarasota. Subscriptions for all five concerts are $180, $230, $280, and $320.
