Director, Playwright and Designer John Jahnke has developed work at BAM Next Wave, The Park Avenue Armory, The MacDowell Colony, The Public Theater, and Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions, among many others. He is the Artistic Director of the theatre company Hotel Savant, and has served as Associate Producer of Media and Performance Art at the Museum of Modern Art/MoMA. He is a former opera and ballet student with a visual arts degree from the California Institute of the Arts Fine Arts program. He will discuss his upcoming work, “Alas, The Nymphs,” an interdisciplinary theater work featuring original music by renowned electronic composer Fennesz, premiering in New York City as part of the BAM Next Wave Festival in December, 2015. It is the first section of Jahnke’s trilogy “Men Go Down”, which utilizes the construction of a Greek drama to examine how the ramifications of antique guilt infest our modern conscience, especially in regard to crimes of war and passion. Part three, “Black Recollections,” which premiered as part of Performance Space 122’s 2011COIL festival, was the first section to be staged. “Alas, The Nymphs” exemplifies Jahnke’s exacting stage installations, and emphasizes the environment in which the audience is placed. Sound, movement and video are key to the impact of the script. For more on Jahnke and his work visit http://www.hotelsavant.com
